Characteristics of Condado de Oriza Reserva

Condado de Oriza Reserva is a red wine made with the Tinta del País (Tempranillo) variety by Pagos del Rey in Olmedillo de Roa, Ribera del Duero.

The Solís family, owners of Pagos del Rey, has 70 hectares of vineyard in the area and works with some 450 farmers from whom it buys the grapes. In total it controls 1,600 hectares of vineyards, has an annual production capacity of nine million litres and has a total of 10,000 barrels.

The Condado de Oriza Reserva vineyards are over 20 years old and are located around Omedillo de Roa, in Burgos.

To prepare Condado de Oriza Reserva, the best grapes are selected and a pre-fermentation maceration is performed for 5 days. Alcoholic fermentation then takes place at a controlled temperature of between 26 and 28 ºC to achieve maximum varietal expression. Lastly it is aged in French and American oak barrels for 24 months and then remains in the bottle for 12 months to complete its ageing before going on the market.

Condado de Oriza Reserva is a wine that is complex yet harmonious as a whole. A pleasant wine suitable for a host of occasions.

Tasting notes Condado de Oriza Reserva

The 2015 vintage started with a winter that had good groundwater reserves. The spring was warm and dry until well into the month of June, when there were intense rainfall at the beginning of the blooming. A summer with some well spread out storms gave way to a very dry autumn. The harvest was slightly ahead of the usual dates, but the analytical and organoleptic features, and the balance of the berries, were ideal. Thus enabled the harvest to take place at the optimal ripening time. The wines from this vintage, which was classified as excellent, have a good colour intensity, significant fruity notes on the nose and a high tannic potential in the mouth, with sweet tannins that indicate the good phenolic ripening of the berries. A vintage reminiscent of the exceptional 2005 vintage.
El Condado de Oriza Reserva 2014 has a complex nose. The aromas of prune, ripe cherry and balsamic and spicy notes stand out. On the palate the aromas perceived in the nose are intermingled with herbal touches and those of leather. It has powerful but well integrated tannins and a medium acidity. Its finish is lingering and velvety.
This was a complicated year. Although the sprouting of the vines was slightly early, the low temperatures recorded during the spring delayed the growth cycle, which no longer recovered in the summer, despite having a warm month of July. The harvest was carried out at a fast pace, and with the extra effort of the viticulturers, who discarded the fruit that did not meet the optimal conditions. This way, they made sure that they avoided the probable effect of the botrytis attacks due to the rains they had around this time. The wines from this vintage, rated as a good one, offer good colour intensity, great fruit expression and a lot of freshness.
