Characteristics of Condado de Haza Crianza

Condado de Haza Crianza is a red wine from the Ribera del Duero region prepared by Condado de Haza, a winery belonging to Grupo Pesquera.

Alejandro Fernández began planting these vineyards in 1987, along the Douro river.   The climate in this area is Mediterranean with a continental influence. It is characterized by a moderate to low anual rainfall of 400-600 mm, dry summers and harsh winters with long temperature fluctuations throughout the seasons.   This wine is a varietal Tempranillo from 200 hectares of land that harbour fine strains of this variety. The vineyards are located between 750 and 850 meters above sea level.   As for maturing, Haza Crianza County remains in American oak barrels for 15 months. It eventually spends 6 months in the bottle before marketing.

Tasting notes Condado de Haza Crianza

The 2017 vintage rated as "Very Good" has been characterized by being a warm and dry year. Low water reserves at the start became more severe during the months of July and August, when conditions were extremely dry except for some heavy rains towards the beginning of the harvest. Yet without a doubt the defining moment of the year was the frost that affected much of Ribera del Duero on April 28th, immediately following budding, resulting in weak plant mass. This affected plant growth and flowering for the entire year resulting in major production losses. This mishap was followed by some very hot months in June and July. Due to these events the wines of this year are characterized by being wines with more volume and medium acidity. Perfect to drink while young and with a good capacity for aging.
After a dry winter, spring came loaded with rain. Thankfully, this water was stored, since it was much needed during the extremely dry summer. The low temperatures during spring delayed the sprouting of the vines, which led the growth cycle to start with delay. However, this delay was offset thanks to the high temperatures recorded in July and August, to the point of delaying ripening in those younger vineyards. The 2016 vintage beat the production record of the 2014 vintage. And not only in production, but also in quality due to the excellent weather conditions and the excellent health of the vineyards. The wines from this vintage offer a lot of volume, with a good capacity to face the passing of time, with roundness and spectacular tannins. A harvest reminiscent of those of the late 80s and early 90s.
This vintage of Condado de Haza Crianza shows all the character of the Tempranillo variety in the winery’s main wine. Intense on the nose, it perfectly blends the ripe red fruit with the toasted and spicy notes of its ageing. In the mouth, it is powerful, broad and silky, with a long and invigorating finish.
After the withering in a mild winter, the warm start of spring brought sprouting forward by almost 10 days. The summer, which was quite cool and dry, enabled the good evolution of the growth cycle and a balanced ripening. This was a vintage without setbacks. Worth mentioning is the high production of this vintage due to good climatic behaviour during the harvest. The wines from this vintage have great colour intensity, and a high fruity expression on the nose and in the mouth. Their balance and tannic potential stand out; these features show us the great potential to produce great wines for ageing, and for lighter and fruitier productions.
This was a complicated year. Although the sprouting of the vines was slightly early, the low temperatures recorded during the spring delayed the growth cycle, which no longer recovered in the summer, despite having a warm month of July. The harvest was carried out at a fast pace, and with the extra effort of the viticulturers, who discarded the fruit that did not meet the optimal conditions. This way, they made sure that they avoided the probable effect of the botrytis attacks due to the rains they had around this time. The wines from this vintage, rated as a good one, offer good colour intensity, great fruit expression and a lot of freshness.
Regarding climate, the 2012 vintage started with the sprouting of the vines in the beginning of spring with the cooler temperatures. In May, generous rainfall and high temperatures gave way to a generalised drought throughout the summer. Luckily, the rains started at the onset of the ripening. The precipitations at the beginning of October, and the nice temperatures during the harvest, resulted in the a uniform phenolic ripening. The wines from this vintage have a good alcoholic strength, balanced by moderate levels of acidity, with a good colour and phenolic intensity, and a suitable level of tannins, all important features for a perfect ageing.
Sight Red coloured. Nose The aroma of blackcurrants appears alongside red roses, there are subtle menthol flavours. Taste

Tasty and potent with notes of dark fruits.

Sight Intense red colour. Nose In the nose, we find aromas of redcurrant, petals of red rose and background of mentholated aromas which provide a very pleasant subtleness. Taste In the mouth, it is tasty, powerful and shows reminiscences of black fruit.
The 2009 vintage started with a winter of low temperatures, which gave way to a cool spring. A dry summer, with warm days and mild nights, and great temperature changes between day and night, led to very balanced, complex and concentrated grapes. As for climate, it was the perfect vintage. This influenced the health of the grapes, which was excellent. Therefore, the wines from this vintage have a good acidity, which is responsible for long-lived wines with a good structure. And generally, responsible for very fruity wines with fresh red fruit that stands out. One of the great vintages of this region.
Sight Intense cherry colour with maroon edges. High layer. Dense legs. Nose Intense and pleasant aromas. The red and black fruits noticed are ripe, almost candied. The notes of cherry take centre stage. When it opens up, the good toasted notes, spices (outstanding cinnamon and licorice) and subtle hints of minerals are also released on a mineral background. Taste Large attack and a silky, soft and light mid palate with a warm touch. Candied fruits still have a high presence along with the toasted, creamy and spicy notes. A subtle hot spicy touch is noticed (pepper). Well balanced wine, with nice tannins. Long finish marked by an aftertaste of balsamic notes. An intense but easy-drinking wine.
Sight Red picota intense, long-violet edging layer high, tinged tears. Nose Raspberry in its purest form, intense with a pleasant aroma of vanilla, which makes these are much more integrated and has created a truly elegant smell. Taste Powerful mouth,  structured, well-integrated wood, leaving a predominance of the fruit.
