Characteristics of Clos Mogador

Clos Mogador, the first Vino de Finca from Q.D.O. Priorat, is one of those wines that moves us. The thrill of feeling the greatness of the earth of Priorat in a cup. One way to understand its nature and fruits, masterfully led by the oenologist René Barbier who guides the elaboration process.

Clos Mogador is a coupage of Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah grown from 2000 hectares of vertiginous slated lands.

Through a careful selection process, Clos Mogador grapes are fermented in different kinds of deposits (wooden, steel and concrete) and aged for 18 months in 300 litre Allier and Nevers French oak barrels. 70% of the barrels used were new and the rest were second year barrels. Once bottled it stays in the winery's cellar for some months before being released to the market.

A wine with an evolution as you drink it. It is recommended to decant it, at least two hours before enjoying.
It can be stored for a long time.

Tasting notes Clos Mogador

The Priorat region was marked by heavy drought and heat. Following an autumn and winter with normal temperatures and rainfall, spring began with an abnormal drought and high temperatures. Flowering was successful, occurring before the expected date, but the rains didn’t come. During the summer the high temperatures continued, and the lack of rainfall resulted in the earliest harvest in history. In general, the wines of this vintage are noted for their concentration, being less pronounced in wines produced with local varieties such as Grenache or Cariñena. Perfect for enjoying young, and with a medium aging capacity.
Clos Mogador 2016 is a deep, concentrated and powerful wine. Yet another vintage of one of the great Priorat wines. An impetuous but balanced nose, with aromas of ripe red fruit, and with elegant toasted notes of aging over a distinguished mineral base note. On the palate it is full, deep and very lingering.
The vintage began in autumn in the best possible way, with good rainfalls that would fill the water reserves for optimal growth development. Winter was characterised by low temperatures and even snow covered some areas of Priorat. March started wet and cold, which delayed the budding of the vines. In mid-May, flowering was encouraged and was followed by a somewhat unstable June with several rainfalls.
A year with a very good balance. This vintage was characterised by the absence of water stress for the plants. Winter and spring were favourable in terms of rainfall and temperatures were slightly higher than usual. At the time of budding, there was no rain, so the vines developed in a suitable manner. The flowering took place in a clean way and the Grenache vines settled in an excellent way. Summer was characterised by cool and dry days, but also humid, which led to good photosynthesis and growth of the plants. During the end of the summer, before the harvest, there was still some humidity, which preserved the freshness of the soil and, consequently, achieving a gradual ripening of the grapes, perfect to retain the aromas and the good acidity. The negative factor was the rain during the harvest days. In short, the vintage has been somewhat atypical for Priorat, with wines that are less voluminous than in a normal year in the area, but with a good acidity that is reflected in the wines and that will keep them optimal for many years.
Nose
Sight Red ripe cherry color with violet reflections. Very high, deep and bright. Dense tear that marks the glass. Nose Intense, complex, changeable and extraordinary on the nose. At the attack, it shows abundant and concentrated aromas of black fruit, vibrant, explosive, which gives way to flowers and balsamic notes. This is only the beginning. With the passage of time creamy shades appear with roasted Mediterranean herbs…everything is always escorted with a wonderful minerality from Priorat. It is worth giving the time to enjoy it on the nose.
Taste At the attack, it is broad and powerful. A lot of volume. Structured and profound. Excellent acidity with fine and noble tannins. Very long finish and extremely persistent. Intense.
Sight A beautiful ripe picota cherry colour with aubergine coloured reflections. Very high robe, deep and bright. Abundant, dense, slow-falling tears show on the glass. Nose An intense and complex nose with fantastic evolution in the glass. Abundant aromas of fleshy, concentrated black fruit appear at first and then give way to floral notes and spices. Gradually gains in nuances with lactic notes, deep mineral notes and nice toasted notes appearing, along with appetising roasted touches, aromatic herbs, balsamic notes and earthy nuances. Plenty of time should be dedicated to this wonderful nose. Taste This red wine is powerful, consistent and bulky in the mouth. Structured, broad and profound. Its high concentration of fruit, excellent acidity and surprisingly strong yet refined tannins, result in an unctuous palate which leaves an infinity of nuances. A very long and extremely persistent finish. Immense.
Sight Beautiful ripe cherry colour with brownish purple reflections. A deep and bright wine with a very high robe. It shows abundant, dense and slow-falling tears. Nose It has intense, fragrant and complex nasal aromas with an impressive evolution in the glass. At the attack, it shows abundant and concentrated aromas of black fruit, which give way to flowers and spicy notes. Progressively, its milky hints, its deep mineral and nice toasted nuances get noticeable and then turn to mellow roasted notes, aromatic herbs, balsamic nuances and earthy hints.  It is worth taking some time to enjoy its nose. Taste In the palate, we found a powerful and consistent red wine, highly bulky, structured, wide and deep. Its abundant notes of fruit, its excellent acidity and its surprisingly refined and marked tannins, provide it with an unctuous mid palate which leaves an infinity of nuances. Long and extremely persistent finish. Very wide.
Sight Deep and very dark, almost black cherry colour with purple reflections. Clean and bright, well covered wine with a very high robe. Abundant elegant tears. Nose It is captivating from the very beginning. On its intense and complex background of spices, with plenty of very nice and seductive notes of vanilla, pepper, mocha, cocoa and milk... which appear slowly and wrap the rest of the aromas, an explosion of intense and very pleasant notes of red and black stewed fruit appears along with elegant violet aromas, a subtle but intense balsamic touch (eucalyptus) and hints of the forests which surround the vineyards and hints of the licorella soils in which the vines are grown. Taste A great wine from Priorat with a pure expression of the grapes and the terroir. It is very elegant, intense and concentrated with has a great personality. From the very first moment, this highly bulky wine coats the palate with its silky texture. It is perfectly structured and balanced. Its huge notes of fruit jam are wrapped in an explosion of spices provided by the good wood in which the wine was aged. Serious mineral background. Excellent and balanced acidity which provides the wine with a good freshness which compensate its high powerness. Great and tasty tannins and an extremely long and persistent finish.  An unforgettable wine. It is already delicious but over the time it will turn fabulous.
Sight Intense dark maroon colour with violet reflections. Very high robe and elegant tears that stain the glass. Nose Complex, expressive, intense and elegant wine with many notes of black and red fruit released along with elegant aromas of violets and fresh balsamic hints. When it opens up, a complex range of spices is displayed (cocoa, mocha, pepper, vanilla, liquorice) along with elegant notes of leather, subtle hints of black olives and good roasted aromas. Its impressive mineral background wraps all these aromas. All of it is awesome! Note that this is a wine that takes time to open up, but as time goes by, the explosion of flavours becomes increasingly striking, expressive and intense. Taste Deep, fleshy, structured and concentrated. Clos Mogador is a wide wine, with lots of volume and a great body. Great tasty, elegant and pleasant mid palate, with a great load of fruit (at some point, slightly candied) wrapped with spicy and toasted aromas. Balanced wine with an excellent acidity, ripe tannins and a well integrated sweet touch. Very long and very, very persistent finish. Elegant and serious wine, complex and intense, and pleasant at the same time. A wine to be enjoyed with the eyes closed.
Sight Cherry color with violet undertones. Intense and well covered.
Nose Intense and complex, with aromas of black fruit and red with an intense balsamic notes on mineral background. Complexity grows out floral notes, licorice, black olive and black chocolate.
Taste In the mouth this wine is sweet, kind, elegant, subtle and warm, while delicate. With good structure and silky, fresh and aromatic, with good load of fruit (appears liquor fruit), sweet and ripe tannins. Long and very persistent.
Sight Color cherry high cape. Nose Aromas of ripe fruit, minerals, chocolate, truffles, herbs and licorice. Taste In the mouth it is powerful, meaty and fruity, with a great explosion of flavors.

    Designation of Origin D.O.Q. Priorat

    Winery Clos Mogador

Priorat is craftsmanship and tradition, old and robust vines that are grown and born deep inside the province of Tarragona. They are grown on slopes that are sleety with low fertility and difficult to grow in. In Priorat they produce great red wines of an excellent quality, a maroon colour, robust, dense and rich flavour, intense aromas and sometimes there are reflections present of minerals from the soils.

Clos Mogador is René Barbier, a pleasant man and passionate about wine, he lives in the past and the future as he does in the present. The history of the winery as well as the wines themselves are a faithful reflection of himself. Having been in the industry for many years, Barbier was one of the pioneers of the revival of the Priorat region, when in 1979 he bet successfully for this difficult area when others ignored it, founding his current winery Clos Mogador in the vicinity of Gratallops.
