Characteristics of Clos Martinet

Clos Martinet is a red wine produced by the winery Mas Martinet in Falset (Tarragona), D.O.Q. Priorat.

The winery Mas Martinet was founded in 1986 by José Luís Pérez, oenologist, researcher, teacher, and one of the main characters in the revival of Priorat.

The farm Mas Martinet, located between Falset and Gratallops, one of the best areas of Priorat, has 7 hectares of vineyards. This farm was chosen back then by José Luís Pérez, according to studies of soils, exposures and microclimates of the areas.

In 2000, Mas Martinet chose to use only organic agriculture, to recover varieties that were almost extinct, to make single-vineyard wines, and to innovate with advice programmes and more efficient and sustainable production processes.

Currently, the wineryis directed by his daughter, Sara Pérez, oenologist of Venus La Universal, among others.

Clos Martinet is a wine made with Grenache, Carignan and a small percentage of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvingon, varieties from the farm Clos Martinet, formed by excellent old vines cultivated organically.

Clos Martinet is one of the great red wines of Priorat. It is very representative of the characteristic licorella (slate) terroir of this D.O. A powerful wine with a great ageing capacity.

Tasting notes Clos Martinet

We present the new 2016 vintage, characterised by the wettest winterin the last five years. Not only did it rain in winter, but there was also wet weather up until summer arrived, especially inMarch and April. In summer everything changed, and it was one of the driest inhistory, with only 28 litres being recorded between July and October.If we compare the temperatures in 2012 and 2016, the 2016 crophad to endure a much colder winter than in 2012, which turned outto be positive, since the frost cleared the fields ofvine parasites. During the spring, lower temperaturesthan in 2012 were also recorded.Due to all these climatic conditions there was a delay insprouting, which began on March 28th, and which led to a delayin flowering of between three and four weeks.Once the summer arrived, the Priorat got all the luck, sincethe rains disappeared, while in the rest of Europethey were incessant. It was something that nobody expected considering thewinter we’d had. Taking into account the delay insprouting, the harvest started around mid-October on some ofthe estates.Obtaining fresh wines with an extraordinary acidity is dueto this long duration of the grape in the strain that has so characterisedthis vintage.
In the warm vintage of 2015, Sara Pérez has managed to extract all the intensity of the Clos Martinet plot. A year in which the power of the area, soil and climate have been perfectly integrated, together with Sara’s knowledge, offering us a wine with great strength and balance. The violets, red fruits, thyme and mineral notes are intertwined with the well-polished tannins to offer us an elegant, deep and long-lasting wine.
A year with a very good balance. This vintage was characterised by the absence of water stress for the plants. Winter and spring were favourable in terms of rainfall and temperatures were slightly higher than usual. At the time of budding, there was no rain, so the vines developed in a suitable manner. The flowering took place in a clean way and the Grenache vines settled in an excellent way. Summer was characterised by cool and dry days, but also humid, which led to good photosynthesis and growth of the plants. During the end of the summer, before the harvest, there was still some humidity, which preserved the freshness of the soil and, consequently, achieving a gradual ripening of the grapes, perfect to retain the aromas and the good acidity. The negative factor was the rain during the harvest days. In short, the vintage has been somewhat atypical for Priorat, with wines that are less voluminous than in a normal year in the area, but with a good acidity that is reflected in the wines and that will keep them optimal for many years.
A year that started with some problems with the flowering but ended up being very good. Winter was colder and rainier than usual. Spring continued with days of low temperatures and a lot of water that delayed flowering and the consequent setting problems until the end of March, affected production. After a complicated year, when the summer began, the rains stopped and the temperatures rose, providing excellent ripening due to optimal rainfall during the year. The year has therefore been one of the best in recent years. Fluidity, acidity and concentration augur for a long life of the wines of this vintage.
Sight Pretty cherry red colour with a maroon rim. Nose Very sophisticated nose, full of nuances. Spices, cocoa, liquorice. Hints of forest, earth and dry stone. Taste A lovely silky texture. Red fruits like cherry and redcurrent combine with notes of fine woods.

Sight Beautiful dark cherry red colour with violet reflections. Bright wine with a medium-high robe. It shows thin and coloured slow-falling tears. Nose Complex, concentrated and at the same time harmonious nasal aromas. Its powerful notes of ripe red fruit (redcurrants and bilberries) stand out along with pleasant toasted aromas. Little by little, some spicy aromas appear with balsamic notes, intense mineral aromas and some earthy hints. A wine full of nuances, which shows an increasing expressivity. Delicious.
Taste A Spanish wine with a powerful attack and a mid palate marked by the abundant notes of fruit and the nice roasted aromas. Tasty and fleshy. It shows a good acidity and an intense tannic sensation. Structured and very elegant. Very long and very persistent finish. A wine that will still improve if it is left to stand for a long time in the bottle.

Winery Mas Martinet

Priorat is craftsmanship and tradition, old and robust vines that are grown and born deep inside the province of Tarragona. They are grown on slopes that are sleety with low fertility and difficult to grow in. In Priorat they produce great red wines of an excellent quality, a maroon colour, robust, dense and rich flavour, intense aromas and sometimes there are reflections present of minerals from the soils.

Josep Lluis Perez was one of the pioneers behind what was widely seen as the revival of Priorat. The Perez Ovejero family founded the Mas Martinet winery in 1989, paying special attention to the orientations, varieties, climate and soils of the area. Twenty years later, it is his daughter Sara who is now in charge, managing the vineyard, which is also home to olive trees and forests. The winery has worked to recover native and traditional varieties, using biological agriculture to ensure that they produce wines that are a real reflection of the landscapes, terroir and surroundings from where they came.
