Characteristics of Clos Fontà

Clos Fontà is a D.O.Q. Priorat red wine, produced by Mas d'en Gil.

This wine is a coupage of Garnacha Tinta and Cariñena from old vines produced in different slopes where olive trees, almond trees and typically Mediterranean vegetation is planted (only one third of the land is dedicated to vine production).
The grape varieties are farmed separately according to the variety and the plot of land from which the grapes originate. They are then joined to make a coupage.
This wine ages for 14 months in mostly French oak barrels, with a small portion in American oak barrels. It rests a minimum of six more months in the bottle.

We recommend decanting this wine about two hours before enjoying.
Serve at 16.0ºC
Contains sulphites
We recommend decanting before consumption
Pairing
Stews, Roasts, Large game, Grilled red meats, White meat with sauce, Small game

Tasting notes Clos Fontà

A year with a very good balance. This vintage was characterised by the absence of water stress for the plants. Winter and spring were favourable in terms of rainfall and temperatures were slightly higher than usual. At the time of budding, there was no rain, so the vines developed in a suitable manner. The flowering took place in a clean way and the Grenache vines settled in an excellent way. Summer was characterised by cool and dry days, but also humid, which led to good photosynthesis and growth of the plants. During the end of the summer, before the harvest, there was still some humidity, which preserved the freshness of the soil and, consequently, achieving a gradual ripening of the grapes, perfect to retain the aromas and the good acidity. The negative factor was the rain during the harvest days. In short, the vintage has been somewhat atypical for Priorat, with wines that are less voluminous than in a normal year in the area, but with a good acidity that is reflected in the wines and that will keep them optimal for many years.
A year that started with some problems with the flowering but ended up being very good. Winter was colder and rainier than usual. Spring continued with days of low temperatures and a lot of water that delayed flowering and the consequent setting problems until the end of March, affected production. After a complicated year, when the summer began, the rains stopped and the temperatures rose, providing excellent ripening due to optimal rainfall during the year. The year has therefore been one of the best in recent years. Fluidity, acidity and concentration augur for a long life of the wines of this vintage.
Sight Intense picota cherry colour with violet tones. Clean and very bright. Pretty and fine tears on the glass. Nose The deep mineral tones from the slate appear at first and then slowly mix with a high concentration of dark fruit, some very ripe red fruit, spices (cinnamon, coffee, cocoa and tobacco) and refreshing balsamic notes. Taste On the palate this wine is robust, powerful and in turn silky and elegant. It is velvety and fleshy on the palate and very tasty. Ripe fruit, delicate toasted notes and minerals intermix forming a balanced set. Good, fresh acidity and intense, ripe tannins. Very long and persistent. An excellent red wine, with a high concentration of flavours and aromas. Powerful and broad.
Sight Cherry red with a ruby rim. Clean and bright. Nose A complex nose with a prominence of wild fruit. Blackberries, blueberries, raspberries and spices. Cinnamon, pepper. Dairy memories, with balsamic, dried flowers, coffee and snuff together with a mineral background provided by the licorella. Taste Powerful, flavourful, meaty and very smart. Tannins still present but of great quality. Good acidity. Menthol, liquorice, some fruit, minerals. Long finish.
Sight Intense red colour with violet reflections. Clean and bright wine. Nose Complex Priorat wine in which the deep minerality provided by the licorella appears on first nosing and is slowly mixed with the heavy load of very ripe black fruit and some red fruit, the spicy notes (cinnamon, coffee, cocoa, tobacco) and its refreshing balsamic aromas. Taste Powerful and elegant wine. Bulky and very velvety, tasty and meaty mid palate, in which the notes of ripe fruit are mixed with the delicate toasted and mineral aromas forming a balanced and harmonious mouth. Its ripe tannins are still present. It shows a good acidity and freshness. Very long and persistent finish. Great wine with a great concentration of flavours and aromas and a powerful, great palate.

Designation of Origin D.O.Q. Priorat

Winery Mas d'en Gil

Priorat is craftsmanship and tradition, old and robust vines that are grown and born deep inside the province of Tarragona. They are grown on slopes that are sleety with low fertility and difficult to grow in. In Priorat they produce great red wines of an excellent quality, a maroon colour, robust, dense and rich flavour, intense aromas and sometimes there are reflections present of minerals from the soils.
