Characteristics of Cillar de Silos

Cillar de Silos is a family winery located in the region of Ribera del Duero which has been producing wines even before this area started to stand out. Among its vineyards, there is a small treasure: a group of vines that were never infected by phylloxera. The fruit of these vines gives us the unique opportunity to get to know the indigenous Tempranillo vines. Cillar de Silos is aged for 13 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting notes Cillar de Silos

After a dry winter, spring came loaded with rain. Thankfully, this water was stored, since it was much needed during the extremely dry summer. The low temperatures during spring delayed the sprouting of the vines, which led the growth cycle to start with delay. However, this delay was offset thanks to the high temperatures recorded in July and August, to the point of delaying ripening in those younger vineyards. The 2016 vintage beat the production record of the 2014 vintage. And not only in production, but also in quality due to the excellent weather conditions and the excellent health of the vineyards. The wines from this vintage offer a lot of volume, with a good capacity to face the passing of time, with roundness and spectacular tannins. A harvest reminiscent of those of the late 80s and early 90s.
Cillar de Silos 2015 is a mature, intense and expressive red wine. In this vintage, the aromas of ripe red fruit stand out, with spicy and elegant toasted notes of the ageing process. On the palate it is silky, with volume and a lingering finish.
After the withering in a mild winter, the warm start of spring brought sprouting forward by almost 10 days. The summer, which was quite cool and dry, enabled the good evolution of the growth cycle and a balanced ripening. This was a vintage without setbacks. Worth mentioning is the high production of this vintage due to good climatic behaviour during the harvest. The wines from this vintage have great colour intensity, and a high fruity expression on the nose and in the mouth. Their balance and tannic potential stand out; these features show us the great potential to produce great wines for ageing, and for lighter and fruitier productions.
Regarding climate, the 2012 vintage started with the sprouting of the vines in the beginning of spring with the cooler temperatures. In May, generous rainfall and high temperatures gave way to a generalised drought throughout the summer. Luckily, the rains started at the onset of the ripening. The precipitations at the beginning of October, and the nice temperatures during the harvest, resulted in the a uniform phenolic ripening. The wines from this vintage have a good alcoholic strength, balanced by moderate levels of acidity, with a good colour and phenolic intensity, and a suitable level of tannins, all important features for a perfect ageing.
After a predictable winter, the weather changed in spring. Temperatures were higher than normal, which caused an early start of the grapes’ ripening cycle. The normal course of the climate at the end of spring and at the beginning of the summer, allowed the vines to recover their usual pace, and the veraison took place on the expected dates. The beginning of the harvest was slightly early due to the strong heat the grapes suffered during their ripening. However, the nice weather throughout the harvest, without rain or frost, provided grapes with an impeccable health. Wines from the 2011 vintage have a slightly higher alcohol strength than usual, with a perfect balance thanks to their natural acidity, concentration of colour and phenolic richness. For all these reasons, this vintage has been classified as excellent, offering high-quality young wines, and wines with the ideal features for their ageing.
Sight Covered cherry red colour with violet reflections. Thin and abundant tear which colours the glass. Nose High intensity and very expressive nose. Very ripe black fruit, slight balsamic, vegetable and floral notes combined with toasted hints with liquorice in a suggestive mineral background. Taste Good and powerful attack, medium-bodied wine with an agile and tasty mid-palate. Present tannins, not polished yet, great acidity and a pretty great load of fruit. Long and persistent finish. A safe bet.
Sight The tasting repport of this wine is being translated. Meanwhile, you can check the Spanish version.
Sight Dark cherry colour, with violet edges. Clean and bright wine. Nose Balanced aromas with good intensity among which the notes of ripe red and black fruit are noticed along with a spicy touch (vanilla, chocolate), expressive notes of liquorice and elegant toasted hints. Taste Good attack with a light but very tasty and meaty mid palate and a silky texture. Its notes of fruit and wood are well integrated with the touch of sweet spices. It has a bitter coffee taste and a correct acidity that freshens the wine. Its tannins are elegant and its finish is nice, long and lingering. A round wine: tasty, fresh and elegant.
Sight Deep and intense red with violet tones. Nose Aromas of red and black fruits, ripe, assembled with fine touches of chocolate and licorice. Taste In the mouth shows the fruit is fresh, flavorful, meaty and long, with gentle tannins and round, leaving a long and pleasant memory.
