Characteristics of Castro das Saiñas
Castro das Saíñas is a single-variety Mencía wine made by the Saíñas winery in the D.O. Ribeira Sacra in Galicia, Spain.
The clusters used to make the Castro das Saíñas wine ferment 100% with stalks and native yeasts in 1000-litre open tanks, macerating with their skins for around 30 days. The resulting wine is racked and undergoes malolactic fermentation, then ages in 400-litre oak barrels for around 10 months.
The Saíñas winery lies about 300 metres above sea level in the heart of the Ribeira Sacra, in the Ribeiras do Miño sub-region where vines produce grapes with aromatic musts with a good sugar content and low acidity, all of which are excellent qualities for making wines and result in wines like this Castro das Saíñas, where the Mencía grape expresses all of its qualities as well as the character of the terroir.
Castro das Saíñas 2018 is a red wine with aromas of wild berries on the nose, accompanied by a subtle mineral nuance. On the palate it is smooth and balanced, reaffirming the fruit with a fresh and tasty mid-palate.
