Characteristics of Casa Castillo Cuvée N Viñas Viejas

Casa Castillo Cuvée N Viñas Viejas is a Monastrell red wine from Bodega Casa Castillo in the D.O. Jumilla. It is a tribute to Nemesio Vicente, founder of the winery and father of the current winemaker and owner José María Vicente.

The grapes for Casa Castillo Cuvée N Viñas Viejas come from the upper part of the Las Gravas vineyard, planted in 1981. It is a north-facing vineyard, at the foot of the Sierra del El Molar, at a height of about 720 metres above sea level. The vineyard is bush-trained and is dry farmed. Its sandy loam-sandy soil is fantastic for cultivating the vine since it avoids the formation of puddles.

To produce Casa Castillo Cuvée N Viñas Viejas the bunches are fermented whole, without destemming. The fermentation takes place in underground winepresses and is carried out spontaneously; i.e. the yeasts that ferment the sugar in the grape are the grape’s won ones, and commercial yeasts are not added for fermenting. Once the alcoholic fermentation is finished, the malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels. Lastly the wine is aged for 19 months in very used French oak barrels so that the wine can finish evolving but without being influenced by the provision of new wood.

Casa Castillo Cuvée N Viñas Viejas is a wine that has great ageing potential. Stored in optimal conditions, it can be consumed until 2029.

Tasting notes Casa Castillo Cuvée N Viñas Viejas

Casa Castillo Cuvée N Viñas Viejas 2015 has aromas of black fruit and esparto, with notes of balsam and undergrowth. On the palate it is juicy, fatty, full-bodied while at the same time fresh due to its acidity, something that will keep it alive and electric for many years.

Designation of Origin D.O. Jumilla

Winery Finca Casa Castillo

To speak of Jumilla wine is to really refer to the Monastrell grape variety. In recent years Jumilla has undergone an impressive transformation. Once used as concentrated and highly alcoholic wines to give strength to weaker wines from other regions, the wines from Jumilla have managed to change this reputation, now enjoying prestige from all over the world. Flavourful wines, with body and concentrated. As well as red wines, the region is also known for their rosés, again produced with the Monastrell variety.

Imágenes y situación D.O. Jumilla

In September of 2016, the person who raised the solid foundations of both the vineyard and the winery Casa Castillo, turned 80 years old. With a glass of wine in his hand, he remembers how the first grapes were vatted under his watchful eye 25 years ago. Today, he proudly watches as the continuity of his legacy is reassured by his family. Today, the main goal of Casa Castillo is to produce quality wines with the personality, flavour and character of each plot, which respect for the tradition of the area, and expressing the features of the land and the microclimate, as well as the particularities of the Mediterranean varieties, mainly on the native red variety Monastrell.
