Characteristics of Carrasviñas Fermentado en Barrica

Carrasviñas Fermentado en Barrica is a white wine made with the Verdejo variety in the D.O. Rueda by the Félix Lorenzo Cachazo winery.

The D.O. Rueda is a prestigious Denomination known for its Verdejo wines. But this has not always been the case. Félix Lorenzo Cachazo was one of the 8 people who fought for this variety until it had its own Denomination of Origin and the reputation it has now. The Lorenzo Family is still making quality wines with the same passion and with their sights set on the international market.

The grape used to make the Carrasviñas Fermentado en Barrica comes from the oldest vineyards in the winery. These are 150-year old pre-phylloxera strains planted in gravelly, poor and rocky terrain. The climate is continental with strong temperature variations of up to 20ºC between day and night. When the grapes are at their optimum ripeness, they are harvested manually in 10kg boxes.

Once in the winery, the Carrasviñas Fermentado en Barrica grape is destemmed and lightly squeezed to extract the first pressings. It is cold-clarified and spontaneously fermented in French oak barrels with its own yeasts over 6 months using the battonage technique. It is put into stainless steel tanks, clarified, stabilised and filtered. After bottling, it sits for up to 4 or 5 months before being sold.

Carrasviñas Fermentado en Barrica is a white wine with the typical Rueda characteristics. The Parker list considered the 2017 vintage to be one of the 8 best wines from this Denomination of Origin.

Apart from white wine, Rueda also produces red wine, often made with the Tempranillo variety.
