Characteristics of Carmelo Rodero Crianza

Carmelo Rodero Crianza is a red wine from DO Ribera del Duero, produced by Bodegas Rodero. The winery is a family project initiated by Carmelo Rodero in the village of Pedrosa de Duero, south of Burgos.

Furthermore, in the beginning, Carmelo Rodero was honoured for selling grapes to the Vega Sicilia winery for 14 years, one of the most internationally recognized Spanish wineries. Carmelo Rodero Crianza is a blend of Tempranillo (90%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). The grapes come from vineyards over 15 years old.

They are planted at an altitude of between 750 and 850m and withstand extreme weather, winters are very cold with strong winds and summers very hot.

Regarding the soil where they are planted, they are clay, with pebbles and sand. These features contribute to a low production vineyard but of great quality. For the preparation of Carmelo Rodero Crianza, grapes are manually selected on a table. Once stemmed and soaked cold for several days, the grapes are passed by gravity into stainless steel tanks for a temperature controlled fermentation.

Finally, Carmelo Rodero Crianza is aged for 15 months in French and American oak barrels, racked every three months.

Once bottled, Carmelo Rodero Crianza rests in the bottle for at least 12 months before going to market.

Tasting notes Carmelo Rodero Crianza

The 2017 vintage rated as "Very Good" has been characterized by being a warm and dry year. Low water reserves at the start became more severe during the months of July and August, when conditions were extremely dry except for some heavy rains towards the beginning of the harvest. Yet without a doubt the defining moment of the year was the frost that affected much of Ribera del Duero on April 28th, immediately following budding, resulting in weak plant mass. This affected plant growth and flowering for the entire year resulting in major production losses. This mishap was followed by some very hot months in June and July. Due to these events the wines of this year are characterized by being wines with more volume and medium acidity. Perfect to drink while young and with a good capacity for aging.
After a dry winter, spring came loaded with rain. Thankfully, this water was stored, since it was much needed during the extremely dry summer. The low temperatures during spring delayed the sprouting of the vines, which led the growth cycle to start with delay. However, this delay was offset thanks to the high temperatures recorded in July and August, to the point of delaying ripening in those younger vineyards. The 2016 vintage beat the production record of the 2014 vintage. And not only in production, but also in quality due to the excellent weather conditions and the excellent health of the vineyards. The wines from this vintage offer a lot of volume, with a good capacity to face the passing of time, with roundness and spectacular tannins. A harvest reminiscent of those of the late 80s and early 90s.
The 2015 vintage started with a winter that had good groundwater reserves. The spring was warm and dry until well into the month of June, when there were intense rainfall at the beginning of the blooming. A summer with some well spread out storms gave way to a very dry autumn. The harvest was slightly ahead of the usual dates, but the analytical and organoleptic features, and the balance of the berries, were ideal. Thus enabled the harvest to take place at the optimal ripening time. The wines from this vintage, which was classified as excellent, have a good colour intensity, significant fruity notes on the nose and a high tannic potential in the mouth, with sweet tannins that indicate the good phenolic ripening of the berries. A vintage reminiscent of the exceptional 2005 vintage.
After the withering in a mild winter, the warm start of spring brought sprouting forward by almost 10 days. The summer, which was quite cool and dry, enabled the good evolution of the growth cycle and a balanced ripening. This was a vintage without setbacks. Worth mentioning is the high production of this vintage due to good climatic behaviour during the harvest. The wines from this vintage have great colour intensity, and a high fruity expression on the nose and in the mouth. Their balance and tannic potential stand out; these features show us the great potential to produce great wines for ageing, and for lighter and fruitier productions.
This was a complicated year. Although the sprouting of the vines was slightly early, the low temperatures recorded during the spring delayed the growth cycle, which no longer recovered in the summer, despite having a warm month of July. The harvest was carried out at a fast pace, and with the extra effort of the viticulturers, who discarded the fruit that did not meet the optimal conditions. This way, they made sure that they avoided the probable effect of the botrytis attacks due to the rains they had around this time. The wines from this vintage, rated as a good one, offer good colour intensity, great fruit expression and a lot of freshness.
Sight Pretty ruby colour, clean and bright. Nose Fruit is presented with great force. Red fruit and ripe black fruit combined with enticing roasted notes and a touch of liquorice to finish. Taste The palate is well structured with much fruit. Very balanced and long finish.
Sight A pretty ruby colour, clean and bright. Nose On the nose it is a great force and a great fruity richness. Red fruit and ripe black fruit with toasted notes and a touch of liquorice at the end. Taste On the palate it is a well-structured wine. Fruit notes. Very balanced and a long finish.
2010 started with heavy frosts in winter and spring, causing a delay in the commencement of the growth cycle. Above all, this situation marked the vintage with a low yield harvest. This delay of the growth cycle was offset by a slightly mild but good ripening. This fact resulted in wines with greater structure, floral wines with very ripe fruit in compote, a little less acid than the 2009 vintage, but with an excellent quality and with a long life ahead. The low production and the excellent ripening helped classify this vintage as excellent.
The 2009 vintage started with a winter of low temperatures, which gave way to a cool spring. A dry summer, with warm days and mild nights, and great temperature changes between day and night, led to very balanced, complex and concentrated grapes. As for climate, it was the perfect vintage. This influenced the health of the grapes, which was excellent. Therefore, the wines from this vintage have a good acidity, which is responsible for long-lived wines with a good structure. And generally, responsible for very fruity wines with fresh red fruit that stands out. One of the great vintages of this region.
Sight Intense cherry colour with maroon edges. Clean and bright wine with a high layer. Good and elegant tears. Nose Intense and very expressive aromas with marked notes of juicy, ripe and fleshy black fruit that give way to the elegant notes provided by the oak: intense toasted and very creamy aromas, abundant spicy notes and an intense and delicate liquorice background. It is a very harmonious and balanced wine, especially once it opens up. Taste A bulky, well-bodied wine, which fills the mouth. It has an envelopping attack, notes of fruit with all kind of nuances and creamy wooden aromas. It has a tasty, silky and long mid palate, a good acidity and well integrated tannins. Long finish with a good persistence that leaves a pleasant toasted aftertaste.  A nice, mature and expressive, which will not disappoint us.
Sight Intense cherry red colour with maroon edges. High robe. Clean and bright wine. Nose Intense and clear aromas among which the notes of ripe black fruit are mixed with sweet spices, elegant toasted notes, a creamy milky touch  and outstanding aromas of liquorice on a good mineral background. Taste Good attack and a long, tasty, meaty and intense mid palate. It shows abundant notes of fruit and creamy toasted aromas. Very good acidity. It has an excellent structure and well integrated tannins. Long and persistent finish. A nice, ripe and expressive wine that will not disappoint us.
Sight Ruby red colour with notes of cherry. Clean and bright.
Nose

The typical aromas of Tinta Fina are the first to appear. As time goes by, the roasted notes gently emerge accompanied by a final touch of licorice.

Taste Characteristic Ribera del Duero wine with intense and tasty attack. Fleshy and slightly warm mid palate. Excellent bouquet with good persistence that reminds the aromas in the nose. Balanced wine with a medium length finish.
Sight Red garnet, good layer. Nose Good intensity with aromas of milk chocolate, red fruits, cherries in brandy. Taste Meaty, slightly warm, medium acidity and great tannins. Average persistence and balsamic aftertaste, characteristic of Ribera wines.

Since the beginning, Carmelo vouched for the future and for quality. He knew that the base for a great wine were good grapes. Therefore, his wines were soon awarded at the most important fairs and tastings, both national and international, serving as support and recognition of their quality. The continuous growth of this winery supports the existence of wines that combine quality, modernity and origin. The gentle and advanced production methods based on the native variety, Tinto Fino, continues to open new market paths, harvest after harvest.
