Capannelle Solare is a barrel-aged red wine made by the Campannelle winery with the Sangiovese and Malvasía Nera varieties in the IGT Toscana.
When Roman businessman Raffaelle Rosetti visited Tuscany in 1974, he discovered a vast winemaking area to explore. He acquired an old estate in Gaiole, in the north of Chianti Classico and rebuilt it to make his own wines. Capannelle currently has 16 hectares of vineyards, mostly planted with local varieties and a modern winery with cutting-edge technology. All of this results in high quality wines with their own identity.
Capannelle Solare comes from vines planted in very poor soil at an altitude of 150–500 metres above sea level. They are cultivated using traditional agriculture and the yield is limited to 35 hectolitres per hectare to obtain a higher concentration in the grape. The harvest is carried out when the grapes reach optimum ripeness.
The Capannelle Solare winemaking process takes place in 30-hl stainless steel tanks. It involves a carbonic maceration of 15 to 20 days and fermentation. It is then aged for 12-14 months in new Allier, Never and Troçais French oak barrels, and finally bottle-aged for 6-12 months before going on sale.
Capannelle Solare is a great introduction to Chianti Classico wines. A red wine with a very unique velvety elegance despite the typical rustic charm of the area.
