Characteristics of Cal Pla Negre

Cal Pla Negre is a red wine from the Priorat, produced by Celler Cal Pla. In the USA it is sold under the name Mas d'en Compte Black Slate Porrera.

This is a small family winery located in Porrera (Tarragona) that can boast a winemaking tradition dating back to 1814.

Cal Pla Negre is made from Garnacha (60%) and Carignan (40%), from vines 10 years old, facing north-west.

The vineyards are planted on terraces, on slate soils at an altitude of 450 metres. The first step in developing Cal Pla Negre is a manual harvest, held during the first week of October.

Once in the winery, and after maceration of the grapes with their own skins, a fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures.

Finally Cal Pla Negre is aged for 12 months in 2nd year barrels of 60% French oak and 40% American oak.

Tasting notes Cal Pla Negre

Cal Pla Negre 2016 is a red wine with a medium to full body and a good fruitiness. In a vintage marked by the heat, the aromas are distinguished by an extra point of ripeness and concentration in the mouth.
The vintage began in autumn in the best possible way, with good rainfalls that would fill the water reserves for optimal growth development. Winter was characterised by low temperatures and even snow covered some areas of Priorat. March started wet and cold, which delayed the budding of the vines. In mid-May, flowering was encouraged and was followed by a somewhat unstable June with several rainfalls.
A year with a very good balance. This vintage was characterised by the absence of water stress for the plants. Winter and spring were favourable in terms of rainfall and temperatures were slightly higher than usual. At the time of budding, there was no rain, so the vines developed in a suitable manner. The flowering took place in a clean way and the Grenache vines settled in an excellent way. Summer was characterised by cool and dry days, but also humid, which led to good photosynthesis and growth of the plants. During the end of the summer, before the harvest, there was still some humidity, which preserved the freshness of the soil and, consequently, achieving a gradual ripening of the grapes, perfect to retain the aromas and the good acidity. The negative factor was the rain during the harvest days. In short, the vintage has been somewhat atypical for Priorat, with wines that are less voluminous than in a normal year in the area, but with a good acidity that is reflected in the wines and that will keep them optimal for many years.
Sight Cherry red with garnet rim. Intense and dark. A thin slightly tinted tear. Nose Intense and complex, fruity aromas of stewed black fruit, toast and spices. Toasted and liquorice notes. Taste Dry, full-bodied, very meaty and tasty. With well integrated tannins and good acidity. It is balanced and persistent. Aftertaste of ripe fruit.
Sight Dark cherry red with maroon edges. Clean and bright. Fine, slightly tinted tears on the glass. Nose Highly intense, complex and pleasant nasal aromas. Notes of leather, toasted notes and intense spicy hints give way to notes of fleshy, ripe black fruit. Subtle minerals are noticed in the background. Taste On the palate, this tasty red wine displays a high concentration of fruit, very good acidity and slightly rough but well integrated tannins. A long finish with fantastic persistency. An aftertaste of ripe fruit, and toasted and mineral notes at retro-olfaction.

    Winery Cal Pla

    Priorat is craftsmanship and tradition, old and robust vines that are grown and born deep inside the province of Tarragona. They are grown on slopes that are sleety with low fertility and difficult to grow in. In Priorat they produce great red wines of an excellent quality, a maroon colour, robust, dense and rich flavour, intense aromas and sometimes there are reflections present of minerals from the soils.
