Boekenhoutskloof Semillon is a single-variety Semillon white wine produced by the Boekenhoutskloof winery in the Franschhoek denomination in South Africa.
Boekenhoutskloof Semillon is made mainly with grapes from one of South Africa’s oldest vineyards dating back to 1902, and featuring alluvial soils with high marl content. The rest of the grapes come from a couple of plots in the Franschhoek valley planted in 1936 and 1942. These are all old vines that produce wines with intense complexity.
The grapes are pressed in whole bunches and fermented spontaneously in classic barrels and in concrete eggs. The resulting wine is aged for 14 months at a low temperature without adding sulphur, to inhibit malolactic activity. This procedure gives the Boekenhoutskloof Semillon wine a structure that means it develops well over time and acquires notes of lanolin, lemon curd and beeswax.
Boekenhoutskloof is a century-old winery in a beautiful setting in the Franschhoek Valley. Its name means “Boekenhout Ravine”. Boekenhout is a Cape beech tree that is highly prized for the production of fine furniture. They are experts in the cultivation and production of Syrah wines. With their Boekenhoutskloof series, they are looking to introduce consumers to their premium range, and they have been so successful that they sell out every vintage.
