Parker ratings for Priorat and the rest of Catalonia

Here is a summary of the ratings of the Catalan regions by Luis Gutiérrez for Parker:

For this new report, Luis Gutiérrez wanted to taste all the wines that make up D.O.Q. Priorat to be able to check the Denomination’s state on the spot. This has been possible due to the small size of the area, which is made up of 106 wineries.

As remarkable conclusions that Luis has come to, we can highlight the long journey they still have ahead to be able to differentiate the villages that form Priorat, due to the fact that the production process masks the territory. He wasn’t able to separate the characteristics of the different village since some of the wines were over-matured, over-extracted, and some even had Brett aromas.

On the last three vintages, he highlights how hot and dry they are being. The freshest and shortest vintage was 2014, while the most balanced one was 2016, with a possible 100 points for L’Ermita.

He pinpoints the work they are carrying out from the D.O. to develop a zoning of villages and farms. But once he tasted the wines of the different areas, he found that there is still a long way to go. However, he does highlight the work they are performing within the DO to continue improving.

In the section of highlights, he names two wineries that have had a greater leap, Mas D’en Gil and Scala Dei. At the level of ‘vinos de parcela’, one of the great surprises is La Coma d’en Romeu by the  Nin-Ortiz family; a spectacular world-class Grenache.
Among the best rated there aren’t many changes. Clos Erasmus with 99 points, Les Manyes by Terroir al Limit also with 99, Mas Doix 1902 Carinyena Centenaria with 97, and of course, L’Ermita with 97 and Clos Mogador with 96.

Rest of Catalonia

For the rest of Catalonia, he chose to make a strict selection and listen to some recommendations. Magnificent results, above all for its high scores obtained in the Montsant area and for sparkling wines.

For the wines of Montsant, Luis has highlighted the area of La Figuera as one of the places of reference. This is where years ago they made the incredible wine  Espectacle, which has been joined by others like Terroir Sense Fronteras by Dominique Huber, Com Tu of the Barbier family or La Figuera by Venus la Universal. Within Montsant, he also points out Joan d’Anguera as one of the new references, for the change towards finesse and the light expression of the fruit.

Within sparkling wines, he has seen as wineries that are looking for quality are drifting away from the brand Cava, due to the positioning in a segment of low prices and low quality. Among the leading wineries that have not left D.O. Cava, they have created a new brand called Corpinnat, which includes RecaredoGramona, Torello, Nadal, Llopart and Sabaté i Coca. Recaredo is one of the high-quality exponents of the brand cava, as evidenced by the scores obtained by its sparkling wines, such as Turó d’en Mota with 96 points, and the Reserva Particular 2007 with 95. Gram also stands out both for its sparkling wines within Cava and for its wines, improving the work in the vineyard.

The project of Pepe Raventós stands out, outside the family winery of Raventós i Blanc. Under the name of Can Sumoi he produces natural and sparkling ancestral wines with very particular bubbles, like Mas del Serral.

Other wineries that should not be forgotten according to Luis are: Castell d’Encus in Costers del Segre. Can RafolsCeller CredoEnric Soler and Alemany i Corrio within Penedès. However, he wanted to highlight two wineries. Abadía de Poblet in Conca de Barbera, for its fino wines and Vinyes d’Olivardots in Emporda, for its wines full of character and local varieties.

Luis Gutiérrez has left us a wide range of wines to discover within all the Catalan denominations. What are you waiting for? Try them!
