Characteristics of Bastión de la Luna

Bastión de la Luna is a red wine from the Rías Baixas produced by the Forjas del Salnés cellar. This is a blend of Mencia with native varieties Caíño, Espadeiro and Loureiro.

The grapes used for Bastión de la Luna comes from old vines.

The harvest is done manually and traditional winemaking is still used, with little interventionist methods, allowing the vineyard to do the talking.

Bastión de la Luna is aged for about 12 months in old French oak barrels.

Bastión de la Luna is a red wine from lands where whites are generally produced. The vines, which grow by the sea, are known for their strong Atlantic character.

Raúl Pérez's collaboration with the winery was used to develop a fresh and very expressive red wine. Forjas del Salnés was primarily a company that built floats for the mussel rafts in the Rias Baixas, but since 2003 has become a charming little family winery.

Tasting notes Bastión de la Luna

The 2017 vintage has been distinguished by the excellent health of the vineyard and the intense heat. Winter and spring were warmer than normal, accelerating the growth cycle 15 days and which was prolonged during summer, bringing forward the date of the harvest to the end of August. The growth cycle went smoothly, with good flowering and no notable pests. In summer, the drought worsened and in August they began to see symptoms of dehydration in the bunches. However, rains at the beginning of September restored the balance of the vineyard. The wines of this vintage are identified by having something more volume due to its warmth and great freshness. A vintage to enjoy young, or as it is the norm for great wines of the area, to save for a few years.
Sight Cherry red with garnet rim. Nose Complex and delicate nose. Aromas of ripe fruits with spicy notes and hints of oak. Taste Fresh and tasty, it is balanced. Memories of minerals and toasted notes. Powerful, long and persistent finish.
Sight

A deep cherry red colour with garnet rim.

Nose

Complex and delicate nose. Red fruits, spices, tea leaves, laurel, mineral notes.

Taste

The taste is fresh, tasty and balanced. There are wonderful memories of minerals. Long finish.

Sight Intense red cherry colour with maroon hints. Clean and bright wine with a medium-high robe and thin tears. Nose Elegant, very attractive aromas with a medium intensity. The wild fruit aromas are released from the very beginning and little by little become more expressive and turn into notes of tasty ripe fruit. Its fragrant floral notes are slowly released along with light toasted aromas and a good milky background. Some subtle and fresh balsamic notes of undergrowth are also felt in the background. Taste A Galician red wine characterised by its freshness and its salinity. A nice wine, with character, with a fresh attack that leads to a smooth mid palate. A very pleasant medium-bodied wine in which the fruit is perfectly balanced with some pleasant toasted notes and a good minerality. A wine with a marked but very balanced acidity and strong but well integrated tannins. Its extremely long finish has a great persistence.  A wine that surprises us and does not leave anybody indifferent.

Designation of Origin D.O. Rías Baixas

Winery Forjas del Salnés

Rías Baixas wines would not be where they are today without the native Albariño grape variety. Although red wines are also produced in Rías Baixas, practically 100% of Rías Baixas wines are white. Among them, the vast majority of them are made with the Albariño grape. As well as young wines, fresh and aromatic, the region also makes wines aged in the barrels, complex wines with great personalities. Albariño wines can either be single varieties, or be part of a blend with other characteristic grapes of the region: Treixadura, Loureira Blanca and Godello.

Imágenes y situación D.O. Rías Baixas

Forjas do Salnés is one of those wineries from Galicia with a rebellious and ground-breaking spirit, that seriously opted to make high-quality red wines in an area with a prevailing production of whites. The recovery of century-old vineyards of hardly known red varieties, such as Caíño, Espadeiro and Loureiro, in addition to the white Albariño from the old vineyard, are the base of their wines and a clear reflection of the terroir: wines full of freshness, with a perfect minerality, ample sensations and with a surprising evolution.
