Characteristics of Barbazul

Barbazul is a red wine from V.T. Cádiz that is made by Huerta de Albalá  in Arcos de la Frontera

Its location between the reservoir of Bornos and Sierra de Grazalema makes it an ideal microclimate for the cultivation of the vine, with a remarkable temperature contrast between day and night, and an annual rainfall of 900 mm, quite unusual for southern Spain.

Barbazul is a coupage of Tintilla de Rota (a recovered native variety), SyrahMerlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, from the winery’s own vineyards and manually harvested.

As for the production, they carry out the alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel. Then, Barbazul is aged for 5 months in French oak barrels that give it certain nuances, both in its aromas and flavours.

Barbazul is very fresh, young and lively. The little brother of Taberner, the flagship of the winery.

Tasting notes Barbazul

Barbazul 2016 is a juicy, deep and fruity red wine. Yet another vintage that displays itself with intensity. On the nose the aromas of ripe red fruit stand out over a very distinguished spicy base note. On the palate it is expressive, intense and with a very lingering finish.
Sight Intense dark cherry colour with violet nuances. Clean and bright, medium-robe wine with thin tears. Nose This new vintage shows intense nasal aromas in which the notes of very ripe black fruit with a touch of liquor stand out along with hints of sweet and hot spices. Little by little, some nice hints of aromatic herbs, balsamic notes and refined toasted aromas are noticed. Light mineral background. Taste In the mouth, this wine from Cadiz is fresh, silky and elegant. It shows abundant aromas of fruit, an excellent, integrated and inviting acidity and a soft and ripe tannic sensation. Long finish with an aftertaste of light liquor notes and a marked persistence.

Sight It has a very bright and deep cherry colour with purple reflections. A medium robe wine with thin tears. Nose An explosion of intense ripe black fruit, with hints of stewed frut and some liquor, wrapped in creamy spices, with a milky touch, hints of chocolate and toffee and light touches of liquorice and mild and pleasant toasted aromas. Its light balsamic and herbal notes and its delicate mineral aromas form a very nice background for this great and captivating set. Taste Very nice and tasty wine with a long and fresh mid palate that fills the mouth with mellow notes of fruit mixed with some very nice creamy aromas and more noticeable balsamic aromas. The toasted aromas stay in the background along with a balanced acidity and sweet tannins. Good and long finish, with very pleasant sensations.  Great tasty, sweety and very nice and seductive wine from Cadiz.
Sight Intense and bright cherry colour with violet trims. Thin tears. Nose The nose is very nice, large and complex. Ripe black fruit is noticed along with rather sweety creamy notes. When it opens up, many notes of sweet spices are released along with hints of licorice and coffee and a subtle minerality. Taste Very tasty, fresh and lively with a long and broad, very suggestive palate. The notes of fruit, softer than in the nose, are noticed along with creamy nuances provided by the oak. Sweet tannins. Good lingering finish. A very nice wine from the lands of Cadiz.
Sight Red cherry in colour with violet tones. Nose Complex on the nose this wine displays aromas of red berries, citrus fruit, fig leaves and aromatic herbs. Taste In the mouth Barbazul is fresh and flavoursome with well balanced acidity and impressive structure leading to a persistent finish

03/12/18 Barbazul 2016 This is an excellent full-bodied, smooth, fruity red wine - I tasted it in Spain, then ordered some for a family wedding, where it was the perfect accompaniment for our middle eastern menu.

The traditional image of Andalusian wine in has undergone what some have called the ´purple revolution’ in the past decade. We have seen in the region a rise in conventional wines that are no longer side-lined in a region whose cultural fabric has so far has been dominated by fortified wines such as Sherry and Manzanilla. Wineries such as Huerta de Albalá have sprung up across Andalusia with the aim of finding different oenological alternatives to show that the south is not only land of fortified wine.
