Characteristics of Azpillaga Urarte Viña El Pago
Azpillaga Urarte Viña el Pago is a red wine made in the D.O.C. Rioja by Azpillaga Urarte in Lanciego, Álava.
Azpillaga Urarte is a family winery that is currently being regenerated. In 1989, they built the Lanciego family winery. When Eduardo took the reigns of the winery in 2001, they started to get rid of herbicides and little by little, they engaged in what is called regenerative agriculture. The winery is home to 12 hectares divided between the towns of Lanciego, Elvillar and Kripan.
Azpillaga Urarte Viña el Pago is mainly made with the Tempranillo grape and partly with Garnacha and Viura. Carbonic maceration (the traditional production method in the area) is the method they use during vinification, without added yeasts. Maceration stretches across 2-3 weeks and is then left to stabilise for a few months in tanks.
Azpillaga Urarte Viña el Pago is a red wine in the classic style of the Rioja Alavesa area. It is a fruity and complex wine, which is very consistent in the mouth.
La Rioja is one of the most important areas of wine production in the world. It has a long history, and exceptional soils and climates. From the Tempranillo and Grenache varieties they make great red wines that are masterfully aged which demonstrates the experience passed from generation to generation.
