Characteristics of Azpillaga Urarte Viña El Pago
Azpillaga Urarte Viña el Pago is a red wine made in the D.O.C. Rioja by Azpillaga Urarte in Lanciego, Álava.
Azpillaga Urarte is a family winery that is currently being regenerated. In 1989, they built the Lanciego family winery. When Eduardo took the reigns of the winery in 2001, they started to get rid of herbicides and little by little, they engaged in what is called regenerative agriculture. The winery is home to 12 hectares divided between the towns of Lanciego, Elvillar and Kripan.
Azpillaga Urarte Viña el Pago is mainly made with the Tempranillo, Gracianogrape and partly with Garnacha and Viura. Carbonic maceration (the traditional production method in the area) is the method they use during vinification, without added yeasts. Maceration stretches across 2-3 weeks and is then left to stabilise for a few months in tanks.
Azpillaga Urarte Viña el Pago is a red wine in the classic style of the Rioja Alavesa area. It is a fruity and complex wine, which is very consistent in the mouth.
Azpillaga Urarte Viña El Pago 2017 is a juicy red wine with pleasant aromas of ripe red and black fruit and delicious floral notes. On the palate it is flavoursome, warm and intense. On the mid-palate it has a balanced acidity, medium tannins and a persistent finish.
High summer temperatures define this vintage. After a mild winter with very little rainfall, spring began with a great deal of rain, which provided favourable conditions for the growth cycle of the vines. During the summer, they experienced very high temperatures and the absence of rain, which resulted in very healthy vines. As a general result, this was a balanced year, where the final absence of rains led to a good concentration of grapes. This year is noted for a vintage with volume that can be enjoyed as a young wine.
After a winter with normal temperatures and rainfall for D.O.Ca Rioja, high temperatures in spring and summer market his year, as well as the absence of rain at the most dangerous times for the vineyard. These factors led to very healthy vines, but the harvest was brought forward three weeks on average. As a result, this year was rated as a very good one in the area, with the only drawback of not reaching full ripeness. Therefore, the wines from this vintage are those typical from Rioja, with a slightly higher alcoholic strength and a good balance between acidity and ripening.
