Characteristics of Arzuaga Gran Reserva

Arzuaga Gran Reserva is a red wine made with the Tinto Fino, Merlot and Albillo varieties by the Arzuaga Navarro winery in the D.O. Ribera de Duero.

Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro was set up in 1993 when the Florentino Arzuaga family bought an estate in the town of Quintanilla de Onésimo (Valladolid) to make their own wines. With the grape being one of the winery’s highest priorities, they combine tradition and experience to create world-renowned limited production wines.

Arzuaga Gran Reserva is a wine of two parts, the first, from old vines aged over 80 years old and, the second, from a small amount of young vines. They are all planted in clay-calcareous soils, and the low fertility and harsh climate in the area give the grape a spectacular concentration. Traditionally cultivated, the harvest is carried out manually at the optimum point of ripeness in 15 kg boxes.

Once in the winery, the Arzuaga Gran Reserva grape goes through a selection process before being destemmed and crushed. It then undergoes pre-fermentation maceration at a low temperature and subsequent fermentation at a controlled temperature of 28°C. Finally, it ages in new French oak barrels for 40 months, and is racked three times during this time.

Arzuaga Reserva unites the structure and complexity of the old strains with the freshness and liveliness of the young strains. Expression and volume in the true Ribera de Duero style.

Tasting notes Arzuaga Gran Reserva

After the withering in a mild winter, the warm start of spring brought sprouting forward by almost 10 days. The summer, which was quite cool and dry, enabled the good evolution of the growth cycle and a balanced ripening. This was a vintage without setbacks. Worth mentioning is the high production of this vintage due to good climatic behaviour during the harvest. The wines from this vintage have great colour intensity, and a high fruity expression on the nose and in the mouth. Their balance and tannic potential stand out; these features show us the great potential to produce great wines for ageing, and for lighter and fruitier productions.
Arzuaga Gran Reserva 2011 is a mature red wine with great aromatic intensity of red forest fruit compote with roasted and smoky notes. On the palate it is powerful, enveloping and well structured. It gives delicious silky sensations, an integrated aftertaste and a prolonged finish.
2010 started with heavy frosts in winter and spring, causing a delay in the commencement of the growth cycle. Above all, this situation marked the vintage with a low yield harvest. This delay of the growth cycle was offset by a slightly mild but good ripening. This fact resulted in wines with greater structure, floral wines with very ripe fruit in compote, a little less acid than the 2009 vintage, but with an excellent quality and with a long life ahead. The low production and the excellent ripening helped classify this vintage as excellent.
Arzuaga Gran Reserva 2009 is a complex, refined and mature red wine. This vintage once again shows us all the personality of long aged wines without concealing the presence of the fruit. Very elegant roasted notes merge with the passage of time with the aromas of candied red fruit. On the palate it is silky, structured and with a very lingering finish.
Sight A beautiful red ruby colour. Clean and bright. Nose Rich and complex aromas: black truffle, wild fruits, nuances of black liquorice and spiced aromas such as clove and cinnamon. Taste A very balanced wine. Unctuous, silky and very pleasant.

As in all European countries, many Spanish wines owe their reputation to the efforts of some traditional families and some large companies that have kept two basic requirements: quality and personality. These family companies have managed to gather their own heritage that allows them to produce wines "at home", with all the control guarantees. This is the case of this laudable winery, Arzuaga Navarro. Since its early days, at the beginning of the 90s, harvest after harvest they have produced wines with the seal of the house, and with the unequalled style of Ribera del Duero.
