Characteristics of Arzuaga Crianza

Arzuaga Crianza is a red wine from Ribera del Duero by Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro, a winery founded in the 90s thanks to the Arzuaga Navarro family, namely, Florentino Arzuaga, after buying La Planta, located in Quintanilla de onésimo.

The climate in the Ribera del Duero is continental but with an Atlantic character. It is characterized by dry summers, long and harsh winters and a pronounced seasonal temperature fluctuation with moderate-low rainfall, about 350-500 mm per year.

Arzuaga Crianza is 100% Tinto Fino  from La Maquinilla, the winery's oldest vineyard in La Plana, from vines over 20 years old planted on land about 911 metres above the sea. The vineyards are planted on clay-limestone soils.
The harvest is done manually and grapes undergo table selection in the cellar. Regarding the development, after stripping, the juice goes to stainless steel tanks to be macerated. Subsequently, an alcoholic fermentation takes place very slowly at a controlled temperature of 27 °C.

Finally, Arzuaga Crianza is aged for 16 months in French ad American oak barrels.

Tasting notes Arzuaga Crianza

The 2017 vintage rated as "Very Good" has been characterized by being a warm and dry year. Low water reserves at the start became more severe during the months of July and August, when conditions were extremely dry except for some heavy rains towards the beginning of the harvest. Yet without a doubt the defining moment of the year was the frost that affected much of Ribera del Duero on April 28th, immediately following budding, resulting in weak plant mass. This affected plant growth and flowering for the entire year resulting in major production losses. This mishap was followed by some very hot months in June and July. Due to these events the wines of this year are characterized by being wines with more volume and medium acidity. Perfect to drink while young and with a good capacity for aging.
After a dry winter, spring came loaded with rain. Thankfully, this water was stored, since it was much needed during the extremely dry summer. The low temperatures during spring delayed the sprouting of the vines, which led the growth cycle to start with delay. However, this delay was offset thanks to the high temperatures recorded in July and August, to the point of delaying ripening in those younger vineyards. The 2016 vintage beat the production record of the 2014 vintage. And not only in production, but also in quality due to the excellent weather conditions and the excellent health of the vineyards. The wines from this vintage offer a lot of volume, with a good capacity to face the passing of time, with roundness and spectacular tannins. A harvest reminiscent of those of the late 80s and early 90s.
Arzuaga Crianza 2015 is an expressive, deep and complex red wine. In this vintage, the aromas of ripe red fruit stand out, well blended with the toasted notes of the aging process. On the palate it is intense, with volume and a lingering and persistent finish.
After the withering in a mild winter, the warm start of spring brought sprouting forward by almost 10 days. The summer, which was quite cool and dry, enabled the good evolution of the growth cycle and a balanced ripening. This was a vintage without setbacks. Worth mentioning is the high production of this vintage due to good climatic behaviour during the harvest. The wines from this vintage have great colour intensity, and a high fruity expression on the nose and in the mouth. Their balance and tannic potential stand out; these features show us the great potential to produce great wines for ageing, and for lighter and fruitier productions.
This was a complicated year. Although the sprouting of the vines was slightly early, the low temperatures recorded during the spring delayed the growth cycle, which no longer recovered in the summer, despite having a warm month of July. The harvest was carried out at a fast pace, and with the extra effort of the viticulturers, who discarded the fruit that did not meet the optimal conditions. This way, they made sure that they avoided the probable effect of the botrytis attacks due to the rains they had around this time. The wines from this vintage, rated as a good one, offer good colour intensity, great fruit expression and a lot of freshness.
Sight

Dark cherry colour with purple reflections. Clean and bright.

Nose

The nose presents fruits, woods, florals and balsamic. Touches of wood due aging and a caramelised background.

Taste

The palate is concentrated, velvety, round and tasty. Notes of black fruit and fine wood tannins appear. Long, elegant finish.

Sight Intense cherry colour. Nose Ripe dark fruit aromas and touches of wood (due to its maceration) are present. Taste Concentrated and flavourful on the palate. Dark fruit and fine woods tannins are present.
2010 started with heavy frosts in winter and spring, causing a delay in the commencement of the growth cycle. Above all, this situation marked the vintage with a low yield harvest. This delay of the growth cycle was offset by a slightly mild but good ripening. This fact resulted in wines with greater structure, floral wines with very ripe fruit in compote, a little less acid than the 2009 vintage, but with an excellent quality and with a long life ahead. The low production and the excellent ripening helped classify this vintage as excellent.
Sight Intense red cherry colour, with dark red edges and some subtle purple reflections. Clean and bright wine with good dense tears. Nose Very intense aromas with powerful, expressive and fleshy notes of ripe black fruit wrapped in intense spices such as vanilla and cinnamon, and exotic spices such as cloves and pepper,... Its good toasted hints and the aromas of chocolate and liquorice complete an intense and elegant aromatic set. Taste A powerful and well-bodied, very tasty and meaty wine. It has an intense and broad attack and a silky, sweet, fresh, very balanced mid palate. Its notes of fruit are still important but the toasted hints provided by the wood become more expressive than in the nose. Very well structured wine with an excellent acidity. Mellow tannins. Very good finish with a very nice persistence.  An easy-drinking and very friendly inviting Crianza wine.
Sight Intense cherry red colour with maroon edges. Clean and bright wine with good tears. Nose Elegant, intense and complex aromas. The ripe red fruit is tinged with elegant toasty aromas of pastries and sweet spices. Taste Intense, wide and bulky wine with a silky, meaty and very tasty mid palate. Very balanced wine with a slightly strong but pleasant acidity. Polished and well integrated tannins and a long and persistent finish.
Sight Ribera del Duero wine with cherry colour and ruby red trims. Beautiful shine. Dense tear. Nose Crianza wine with complex aromas. Good presence of black fruit on a background of spiced, roasted and smoked notes provided by the oak, which gain in power with airing. Taste Wide and dense attack that fills the mouth. Intense mid palate, full of fruit and creamy notes. Ripe tannins. Balanced and powerful in the mouth. A refined and elegant wine.
Sight Red wine from Ribera de Duero with a cherry colour and violet trims. Beautiful shine and dense tears. Nose Crianza wine in which the complex aromas nuanced by black fruit stand out until the notes of wood and the aromas that wood provides such as spices, roasted, smoked, snuff,... take center stage. Live and fresh aromas. Taste Broad and dense attack. Balanced wine with an intense mid palate, with many creamy and fruity sensations. A wine that fills the mouth with his power and flavours. Good presence of sweet tannins. Lingering finish. An elegant and tasty wine.

Imágenes y situación D.O. Ribera del Duero

As in all European countries, many Spanish wines owe their reputation to the efforts of some traditional families and some large companies that have kept two basic requirements: quality and personality. These family companies have managed to gather their own heritage that allows them to produce wines "at home", with all the control guarantees. This is the case of this laudable winery, Arzuaga Navarro. Since its early days, at the beginning of the 90s, harvest after harvest they have produced wines with the seal of the house, and with the unequalled style of Ribera del Duero.
