Characteristics of Artigas

Artigas is a red wine made by Bodegas Mas Alta in the Priorat. It is a blend of Grenache Noir together with Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The grapes come from vineyards and winemakers in the village of Viella Alta.

The age of the vines ranges, from between 10 years at the youngest, to 90 for the oldest. They grow on soils of slate, clay and limestone, approximately between 250 and 450 metres above sea level.

Its low-yielding vineyards result in growing high quality grapes.

The harvest is manual and Artigas grapes undergo a double selection process before barrelling by gravity.

The subsequent fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures.

Artigas finally spends 16-month aging in French oak barrels from Allier, 35% of which are new barrels, 30% are one year old and 35% two years old.

Bodegas Mas Alta was established in 1998 when Michel Vanhoutte, with his passion for wine and some Belgian partners, began creating plantations of vineyards in the Priorat.

Tasting notes Artigas

The vintage began in autumn in the best possible way, with good rainfalls that would fill the water reserves for optimal growth development. Winter was characterised by low temperatures and even snow covered some areas of Priorat. March started wet and cold, which delayed the budding of the vines. In mid-May, flowering was encouraged and was followed by a somewhat unstable June with several rainfalls.
A year with a very good balance. This vintage was characterised by the absence of water stress for the plants. Winter and spring were favourable in terms of rainfall and temperatures were slightly higher than usual. At the time of budding, there was no rain, so the vines developed in a suitable manner. The flowering took place in a clean way and the Grenache vines settled in an excellent way. Summer was characterised by cool and dry days, but also humid, which led to good photosynthesis and growth of the plants. During the end of the summer, before the harvest, there was still some humidity, which preserved the freshness of the soil and, consequently, achieving a gradual ripening of the grapes, perfect to retain the aromas and the good acidity. The negative factor was the rain during the harvest days. In short, the vintage has been somewhat atypical for Priorat, with wines that are less voluminous than in a normal year in the area, but with a good acidity that is reflected in the wines and that will keep them optimal for many years.
Sight Powerful cherry red with garnet rim. Thin red tear. Nose Good intensity and fruity aromas. Notes of toasted oak with hints of spice and liquorice. Mineral nuances in the aftertaste. Taste Powerful and fresh. Good balance and acidity. Fruity with notes of oak and mineral notes. A somewhat bitter end with persistent tannins.
Sight Intense red cherry colour with garnet rim. Fine tinted tear. Nose Good intensity on the nose. Lots of fruit, especially ripe black fruit. Toasted oak, spices, mountain herbs, liquorice and some minerality from the licorella. Taste The palate is a powerful, but fresh. Balanced with good acidity. Again, a prominence of fruit with memories of the barrel and a special minerality. Tannins are present but friendly. Long and very persistent slightly bitter aftertaste.
Sight Pretty, deep, ruby red colour with violet reflections. Clean and bright, with abundant dark tears staining the glass. Nose Lots of ripe black fruit with aromas of picota cherries, wild plums and blackcurrents prevailing. Subtle hints of fine woods and strong mineral notes. Taste Rounded, well-balanced and fresh with a velvety texture and soft tannins. A delicious red wine.

    Production area D.O.Q. Priorat

    Winery Bodegas Mas Alta

Priorat is craftsmanship and tradition, old and robust vines that are grown and born deep inside the province of Tarragona. They are grown on slopes that are sleety with low fertility and difficult to grow in. In Priorat they produce great red wines of an excellent quality, a maroon colour, robust, dense and rich flavour, intense aromas and sometimes there are reflections present of minerals from the soils.
