Characteristics of Altos de Torona O Rosal

Altos de Torona O Rosal is a young white wine made with the Albariño, Caíño Blanco and Loureira Blanca native varieties in the D.O. Rías Baixas by the Altos de Torona winery.

Founded in 2000 in the heart of O Rosal, the Altos de Torona estate lies on a single 100 hectare plot of native variety vineyards. It is undoubtedly the largest vineyard in Rías Baixas. These are vineyards where the winemaker, Pablo Ibáñez Sarmiento, relies on biodiversity and integrated production to produce high-end wines.

The Altos de Torona O Rosal vineyards are located on a south-facing hillside 3.5 kilometers from the Miño River and 10 km from the Atlantic Ocean. These strains are planted in granitic, sandy and very permeable soil and cultivated using environmentally friendly practices. Through the protection offered by biodiversity, fauna and flora act as natural aids to maintaining the vine’s balance. The harvest is manual and each variety is collected separately.

The Altos de Torona O Rosal grapes are crushed, destemmed and cold macerated. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. Finally the wine ages on fine lees for 4 months.

The unctuous and persistent nature of Altos de Torona O Rosal makes it a unique white wine from the D.O. Rías Baixas.

Tasting notes Altos de Torona O Rosal

Altos de Torona O Rosal 2018 is a creamy white wine with intense aromas of stone fruits like peach, and tropical fruits like mango, accompanied by balsamic notes of bay leaves. On the palate it is unctuous and sweet with a lingering finish.
The 2017 vintage has been distinguished by the excellent health of the vineyard and the intense heat. Winter and spring were warmer than normal, accelerating the growth cycle 15 days and which was prolonged during summer, bringing forward the date of the harvest to the end of August. The growth cycle went smoothly, with good flowering and no notable pests. In summer, the drought worsened and in August they began to see symptoms of dehydration in the bunches. However, rains at the beginning of September restored the balance of the vineyard. The wines of this vintage are identified by having something more volume due to its warmth and great freshness. A vintage to enjoy young, or as it is the norm for great wines of the area, to save for a few years.

Designation of Origin D.O. Rías Baixas

Rías Baixas wines would not be where they are today without the native Albariño grape variety. Although red wines are also produced in Rías Baixas, practically 100% of Rías Baixas wines are white. Among them, the vast majority of them are made with the Albariño grape. As well as young wines, fresh and aromatic, the region also makes wines aged in the barrels, complex wines with great personalities. Albariño wines can either be single varieties, or be part of a blend with other characteristic grapes of the region: Treixadura, Loureira Blanca and Godello.
