Characteristics of Allende Aurus
Allende Aurus is a red wine produced by Finca Allende in Briones, D.O.Ca. La Rioja.
In 1986 Miguel Ángel de Gregorio discovers, in Briones, a unique terroir that he fell in love with. This is when he started to buy small vineyard areas with old vines. However, it was not until 1995 when he created his first Allende vintage. From this moment, he focused all his efforts on showing the character and the expressiveness of the terroir in his wines, on extracting all the essence of each one of his vines. He uses environmentally sustainable cultivation and follows the natural cycles of the plant, with organic fertiliser and mechanical tilling, without using any herbicides.
Allende Aurus is a wine made from Tempranillo and Graciano from their own vineyards located in Briones. They are over 60 years old, at around 500 metres of altitude, facing north. They are planted on clay loam soils with plenty of gravel and stones.
Harvesting is carried out manually, selecting the grapes in the vineyard and in the winery. Once the grapes have been destemmed, and without crushing, they are vatted in French oak barrel. Here, they go through the cold pre-fermentation maceration for 6 days at 5ºC. After this, they ferment at a controlled temperature, 28ºC, for 16 days, carrying out three pump-overs every day. The full maceration with the skins is of 22 days. Devatting is through gravity and the pressing is performed vertically. The malolactic fermentation takes place in new Bordeaux barrels made of French oak, where it is aged for 24 months with racking every 4 months. This wine is bottled without clarifying or filtering.
Allende Aurus is a mature, powerful and elegant wine. With a great aromatic complexity, the aromas of very ripe black fruit stand out, with notes of liquorice, spices and elegant notes from the roasting. In the mouth, long and persistent. It is a fantastic aged wine.
