Characteristics of Albet i Noya Reserva Martí

Albet i Noya Reserva Martí is an organic red wine made with Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Syrah and Merlot varieties from the D.O. Penedès and made by Albet and Noya.

5 generations of farmers work the Albet and Noya vineyards. And this wine is a tribute to Martí Albet Esteve, the latest family member to begin working in the family business. The family have been pioneering organic wine production in Penedès since 1978, and everything they make is certified by the CCPAE under strict supervision. They are always pushing boundaries, and are a driving force behind experimental projects like bringing back ancient varieties or discovering native varieties and those that are resistant to climate change.

Organic farming is the very foundation of the Albet and Noya Reserva Martí. To make a great quality wine, they gather the best selection of 30-year-old strains from the different estates. Low yield vineyards planted in clayey-calcareous soils, without no insecticide and that enhance the biodiversity balance.

Albet i Noya Reserva Martí is macerated cold for 4 days and fermented with skins for 6 to 8 days. It is not clarified or cold stabilised. A slight filtration is carried out. It spends two years aging in new French oak barrels and 3 years in the bottle.

Albet i Noya Reserva Martí is a red wine to save. When the wine reaches 10 years old, it undergoes the “Phoenix” process. A technique that involves opening the bottle and replacing the cap with a new one so that the wine continues to age in good conditions.

Albet i Noya Reserva Martí 2011 is a concentrated red wine with ripe red and black fruit, and balsamic and spicy notes. On the palate it is structured, intense and persistent.

Today, the D.O Penedès is experimenting with viticulture and winemaking like no other region in Spain, home to a vast range of different grape varieties. The region is home to traditional white and red varieties, foreign ones, noble ones, permitted grapes, experimental grapes, and those that demostrate intrinsic qualities. As well as the grapes, the production techniques used are also worth noting, the location of the vineyards, the yields per hectare, the wines produced using traditional, original or even exclusive blends, the different ageing times, as well as the complexity of the different barrels used! But the reality is, given the vast diversity, it can be difficult to pinpoint what really defines a wine from Penedès, since there are so many types of wines and wineries in the region. However, the common denominator of all the wines from Penedès continues to be balance and quality.

Albet i Noya was, among other things, the first national winery to make organic wines. In 1978, Josep Maria Albet i Noya represented the Unió de Pagesos in the Regulatory Council of D.O. Penedès, when a Danish company addressed the D.O. looking for a producer of organic wine. At the time, there were no organic producers in the entire state, and the Council discussed the issue with Josep Maria, a strict vegetarian. From then and until this day, his wines are the paradigm of the strictest organic production and, undoubtedly, one of the most exciting innovations of Penedès. It has positioned itself on the market, with boutique wines made in a modern way, with a characteristic and personal Mediterranean style.
