Characteristics of Alabaster

Alabaster is a great wine from Toro, produced by the Eguren family. It is elegant and delicate as the alabaster after which it is named to pay tribute to the pots in which Egyptians and Greeks used to keep their best perfumes and scents.
Alabaster is made of Tinta de Toro grapes from very old vines, pre-phylloxera, with a very low yield. A sustainable agriculture is applied, using natural fertilisers and without weed-killers or pesticides. The grape harvest is conducted in a handicraft way and the grapes are carefully selected. When the grapes arrive to the winery, the grapes are selected grain by grain and are manually destemmed. The grapes are traditionally treaded and are fermented in open vats with smooth pumpings.
Both the fermentation and the ageing take place in French oak barrels where the wine stays for 18 months. It is recommended decanting this wine at least 4-6 hours before serving it. Huge ageing capacity.
A red wine difficult to forget. It is made to be slowly enjoyed in good company.
Alcohol: 14.5%
Serve at 17ºC
We recommend decanting before consumption
Pairing
Game animals, Roasted red meats, Game stew, Alone, Large game

Tasting notes Alabaster

The climate year in Toro was the same as its close neighbors in Ribera de Duero: hot and dry. With one big exception: they didn’t suffer the tragic frost of April 28. The spring began with high temperatures resulting in early budding, and later a sudden drop in temperatures caused the slowdown of the growth cycle again. The late spring and early summer suffered high temperatures that advanced the cycle. In late July and August, temperatures eased up and some precipitation ensured the water reserves until the end of the harvest, improving acidity and giving fruitiness to the wine.
This is an excellent vintage in D.O. Toro. With a somewhat particular autumn due to scarce rainfall and slightly higher than normal temperatures. It wasn’t until early January that the rainfall went back to normal. From February to March, temperatures and rainfall were normal, so the water reserves and the growth cycle began correctly.Budding and flowering were delayed for a few days due to low temperatures in May.The high temperatures start at the end of June, boosting the flowering and growth process. The summer went by without any major weather events until mid-September, when light rains and a drop in temperatures led to a slower ripening until the start of the harvest, which arrived with an optimum degree of ripeness. The wines of this vintage present a great balance between ripeness and acidity. Wines fresh in their youth and prepared to age perfectly.
This year, which was described as a very good one, started with high temperatures that did not lower until the end of November. There were also quite low water reserves. In the early spring, temperatures began to rise, leading to the first bleedings of the vines. The beginning of the growth cycle did not present any major upheavals, except for the low humidity due to the lack of rain during the winter. During May, the vines began to develop their buds, causing the flowering during the first week of June. When they started to ripen, the drought and the stress on the vines was evident. At the end of August, there a certain amount of rain helped to hydrate the bunches, which helped to collect the healthiest grapes. As a result, we have a year with wines of a concentrated profile and some acidity. Perfect in their youth and with a medium ageing capacity.
The vintage began with a rainy autumn and low temperatures that produced frost for days in a row in December. At the beginning of March, temperatures began to recover and at the beginning of April, the start of the growth cycle was already visible. Due to the persistence of high temperatures, the growth of the vines took place faster, bringing forward the flowering. In June, temperatures dropped but in July they increased significantly, causing the dehydration of some berries. In August and early September the weather evolved normally, until the arrival of the harvest. As a result, we have a year with wines of good body and acidity. Fluid wines in their youth and with a good ageing capacity.
The 2013 vintage, rated as a very good one, began in a complicated way. In the early spring, in April and May, temperatures were low and there were heavy rains, significantly delaying the start of the growth cycle. This resulted in late flowering and therefore later ripening. Before the harvest, there was a considerable amount of rain, which produced an interspersed harvest. After a cold and rainy year, the profile of the wines they have produced are less concentrated than usual. Fresher and with a good acidity.
Sight Intense, dark and deep cherry colour. Clean and bright wine with elegant slow-falling tears. Nose Intense, concentrated aromas, with a huge load of pleasant notes of fruit, with lots of ripe black fruit, almost jam, mixed with intense creamy and milky aromas, elegant notes of wood and great mineral touches. In the background, light floral aromas. Taste Powerful, strong, elegant and serious wine, with a lot of volume and a great body. It has a silky texture and a long, very tasty, meaty mid palate, full of notes of black fruit jam in all its nuances. It shows and excellent acidity and nice tannins that need some time to finish polishing. Very long and very persistent finish.

    Production area D.O. Toro

    Winery Teso la Monja

In Toro, the red wines are mainly made with the Tinta de Toro grape variety, planted on soils of fluvial origin by the influence of the Duero River and its tributaries, grown on poor, sandy and dry soils the further away you move from the river. Toro offers powerful wines, well bodied, flavourful, complex, and tannic. Although on a smaller scale, the region also produces white wines using the Verdejo and Malvasía varieties. Since the ´80’s, Toro has experienced a revival in its wines, thanks to a new generation of highly skilled winemakers and the installation of many big names in the region, such as Pintia, a winery belonging to the Vega Sicília group, or Teso la Monja, part of Sierra Cantabria.
