Al-Cantàra O’ scuru o’ scuru is an organic red wine made in the DOC Etna (Sicily) by the Al-Cantàra winery with the Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio native varieties.
This young winery located on the slopes of Sicilian mount Etna, in the town of Randazzo, is named after the river that crosses the valley where the winery and the 14 hectares of vineyards lie. The owner, Pucci Giuffrid is passionate about poetry and wine, and works to unite (Al-Cantàra is bridge in Italian) these two arts through his produce. Something that he seems to have achieved in his wines.
The Al-Cantàra O’ scuru o’ scuru grapes come from vines between 50 and 60 years old. A single vineyard that is 620 metres above sea level and planted in volcanic soil that is rich in minerals and fossils, and at a density of 6,000 strains per hectare. They practice ecological farming following organic and biodynamic principles. The grapes are harvested manually in small baskets.
As soon as the Al-Cantàra O’ scuru o’ scuru grapes reach the winery, they are destemmed and pressed. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature and the wine is then macerated for a week. Then the wine is transferred to 500-litre oak barrels where malolactic fermentation takes place. Finally the wine ages for 12 months in stainless steel tanks.
Inspired by a sonnet written by Italian poet Nino Martolo, Al-Cantàra O’ scuru o’ scuru is a Sicilian red wine that reveals the unique expression of the volcanic terroir.
