Characteristics of A Graña
A Graña is a barrel-aged white wine made by the Galician winery Nanclares y Prieto with the Albariño variety in the D.O. Rías Baixas.
An economist by trade, Alberto Nanclares left the world of multinationals to turn his focus towards his true passion in Cambados (Pontevedra): viticulture. He learned how to work with minimal intervention to expert level, and in a short time his Nanclares y Prieto winery became a leading producer of innovative wines with their own identity in the Rías Baixas.
A Graña comes from vines aged over 30 years old and planted in shallow, sandy loam soils. They are cultivated using environmentally friendly agriculture, respecting the character of each terroir. The harvest and grape selection take place manually in the vineyard using 15 kg boxes.
The A Graña grapes are pressed in a whole bunch using a pneumatic low pressure press. The resulting must is then fermented with its own native yeasts in stainless steel tanks and in new chestnut barrels. Finally it ages on its lees for 11 months with weekly batonnage and 3 more months in the bottle.
A Graña is a very limited production wine made from the Rías Baixas star variety. A fresh, mineral and unctuous white wine.
A Graña 2018 is an aromatic wine with tropical fruit fragrances, floral notes and balsamic touches. On the palate it is fresh, unctuous and elegant. A wine with body and acidity and a very mineral finish.
Rías Baixas wines would not be where they are today without the native Albariño grape variety. Although red wines are also produced in Rías Baixas, practically 100% of Rías Baixas wines are white. Among them, the vast majority of them are made with the Albariño grape. As well as young wines, fresh and aromatic, the region also makes wines aged in the barrels, complex wines with great personalities. Albariño wines can either be single varieties, or be part of a blend with other characteristic grapes of the region: Treixadura, Loureira Blanca and Godello.
