Wine from winery Figuero

Figuero, or Tinto Figuero, is the example of the experience of generations, of hard work and perseverance in lands of Ribera del Duero. Their wines are currently recognised in more than 25 countries around the world. In the winery, everything is shiny, new, aseptic, functional. It is bioclimatic, designed to work by gravity, with selection tables for bunches and grapes, and it has the most modern oenological techniques. Its warmest spot is found in its spectacular ageing room, that houses a stock of 1,000 American and French oak barrels.

More about Figuero

The history of Tinto Figuero is embodied in José María García, born in La Horra in 1936, in a family of winegrowers, and his wife Milagros Figuero, who he married in 1961, also from La Horra and from a family of winegrowers. From an early age, when he was 12, Jose María already planted vines and carefully tended the vineyard as his grandparents taught him. From them he inherited his passion for well-done work and patience. The grapes that are harvested have been sold, since 1968, to the best wineries in the region, mythical wineries, and it was not until the end of the last century when the creation of the family winery, for the production of their own wines, began to take shape.

Today, his three children, Carlos, Henar and Antonio, married respectively to Esther, J. Felipe and Pilar, form the heart of the family that is completely devoted to the vineyards and the winery.

History of the winery

Viñedos y Bodegas García Figuero were finally opened in 2001, in the surroundings of La Horra, at 802 metres above sea level. The architectural project was created by Esther Regidor, and the winery is designed to give continuity to the natural process developed in the vineyard, and as a space where the winemaking process is finished. It is a traditional, modern, bioclimatic, and efficient winery. The building is full of simple spaces, straight and pure architectural forms that delve into the ground to emerge later on. It is made with materials used traditionally, natural stone, wood, metal as the more noble material, to enhance the only part that fully emerges to the outside, and also the glass, which allows the visual union with the environment. The interior spaces are distributed in areas according to their function. All of them have the same level, so moving between one and other is easy, technically speaking, and resounding when it comes to its appearance. The ageing and bottling areas are located in rectangular caves, with beautiful pillars that are over 10 metres high. They support the natural terrain and they can only be seen on the outside due to the "zarceras" that allow ventilation, just like the 12th century wineries that can be found in the area. The area leading to the exterior is a block covered with stone from this area, without treatment, that emerges from the ground and separates the space destined to reception and dispatch. This space, totally glazed and open, allows a visual connection with the environment and the interior, through the three levels generated in the building, which makes it a place for communication. Crowning all the functional warehouses that are underground, we can find the prism that houses the tasting room, with a large window through which we can see the surrounding vineyards. It also provides shelter for the entrance of the main façade.

The winery makes wine with grapes from more than eighty hectares, of which one third are old vines that are over sixty years old. The Tempranillo clone from the García-Figuero family comes from pre-phylloxeric vines that French religious people who arrived at La Horra in 1908 replanted between 1912 and 1920. In later years, the García and the Figuero families continued to plant vineyards using the same system. Some years later, José María selected the plots that gave the best grapes, so the winery currently owns and works with 80 hectares of qualified vineyard, in an exclusive selection of 21 plots of old vines that are over sixty years old.

Work philosophy

In the line with respect and maximum care, all vineyards are cultivated in a traditional way, on dry land, where manual work prevails to get rid of weeds, green pruning, removal of lateral shoots, thinning of bunches, etc. All of this ends with the manual harvest in traditional baskets made of chestnut, to later select the grapes and treat them with utmost care, as well as taking care of the natural surroundings.

The location of the winery, on a slight hillside, allows vinification by gravity. They also take advantage of the best orientation and the groundwater levels to naturally achieve optimal conditions of temperature, humidity and ventilation.

The fermentation takes place naturally and spontaneously through the use of native yeasts and the temperature control system. The ageing room is located inside the hill, and it maintains a temperature between 12 and 16ºC. The ventilation system is natural, carried out through the use of "zarceras", vents or natural vents, which provide the necessary renewal of air and help maintain the temperature. In this room we can find more than a thousand American and French oak barrels, selected among the best cooperages in the world. The bottling room is a fundamental element to guarantee quality, as well as the best conditions of their wines. This is why all wines are bottled in the property, following the strictest guidelines and using top-quality corks.

The oenological team is formed by Jean François Hébrard and Óscar Rodríguez, two great professionals with an extensive winemaking experience.

Wines from bodegas Tinto Figuero

Below we present you with wines from Tinto Figuero:

Tinto Figuero 4 is made 100% with Tempranillo aged between 15 and 25 years, clarified with egg white, and aged for 4 months in new (50%) and single-use barrels: 75% American, 25% French. On the nose, it is open and very intense, with an explosion of fresh red fruit (raspberry, blueberry) with touches of black pepper and liquorice. In the mouth, it is sweet and fresh, unctuous and ample, with velvety tannins, and a fresh and pleasant aftertaste that invites you to drink.

Tinto Figuero 12 is a crianza that is made from Tempranillo grapes, from vineyards with an average age of 40 years. It is aged for 12 months in new single-use barrels: 60% American, 40% French, and it is clarified with egg white. It has a good intensity and fresh aroma, where the red fruit stands out within a wide range of spices (vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and pink pepper), and the wood gives it notes of blond tobacco and toffee. In the mouth it is ample, with a very good tannic structure, prolonged by a great acidity that keeps it very fresh. All the aromatic range perceived in the nose appears once again in the mouth.

Tinto Figuero 15 is made from their own vineyards, planted with 100% Tempranillo that is over 60 years old, and aged for 15 months in new French and American oak barrels. On the nose it is elegant, intense and very complex, with a subtle combination of black fruits (blackcurrant) and plum, black cocoa and strong coffee. Nuances of liquorice and flowers (lily, violet) with perfectly integrated wood. A great presence in the mouth, with a large velvety structure, and a beautiful finish prolonged by its delicate acidity.

Milagros de Figuero is made with Tempranillo that is over 60 years old. It goes through the malolactic fermentation in 500-litre barrels, and an ageing of up to 16 months in new 500-litre French oak barrels. It has a complex, intense aroma, where wild fruits (redcurrant, blueberry), hints of candy and fruit yoghurt prevail, with notes of toffee and box of cigars. In the mouth it is ample and powerful, with a great tannic structure, with red fruit and notes of roasting.

Figuero Viñas Viejas is made with Tempranillo from a selection of their own vineyards that are over 50 years old, located in La Horra, planted on soils of clay and sandy, and at an altitude between 800-840 metres. It is aged for 15 months in new French oak barrels. Complex and elegant on the nose, where the notes of red and black fruit, such as blackberry, raspberry and blackcurrant, stand out on the spicy nuances (nutmeg, black pepper), accompanied at the end by subtle touches of fine leather and minerals like graphite or slate. In the mouth it is dense, with a great structure and a very good balance. The final acidity and the aromatic complexity take part in its lingering finish.

Figuero Noble is made from their own vineyards, planted with 100% Tempranillo that is over 70 years old, and aged for 21 months in new French and American oak barrels of very fine grain. Intense aroma, from very ripe fruit (black plum, blackberry), through minerals and liquorice, to end in a plethora of aromas of its ageing, like spices (nutmeg), eucalyptus, chocolate, and toffee, all in perfect harmony. In the mouth it is fleshy and powerful, with ripe and elegant tannins that give it an exceptional body. Very well balanced and lively, with harmony between the fruit and the wood. It is a lingering wine, with a silky and noble finish that encourages you to continue drinking.

Figuero Tinus is made with Tempranillo that is over 70 years old. It goes through the alcoholic fermentation in 500-litre French barrels, and the malolactic fermentation also in the same barrels in horizontal position.
