The Pérez Villota family has been running the Bodegas Villota for more than 50 years. That is many hours, days, months and years to dream. Now run by the fourth generation, this family’s dream was to be at the height of excellence and gaining recognition from the best tasters and wine masters. Dreaming is fine, but you have to remember that if you want something a lot, it might actually happen. And for them it has! Journalist Tim Atkin (one of the most important figures in the world of wine) fell in love with their Villota Blanco Selección.

Villota Blanco Selección is an aged white produced by Bodegas Villota in Lapuebla de Labarca (right on the border between Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa), in the D.O.Ca. Rioja, in the north of Spain (on both banks of the Ebro river).

This area has a mainly dry and sunny Atlantic climate. This is where Villota runs the Santa María plot, with 45-year-old vines, where quality is more important than quantity and only the best grapes are selected to make Villota Blanco Selección.

Just when it seems that the D.O.Ca Rioja is shaking off its traditional reputation for reds, it starts to stand out with its whites. In principle, these are neutral, unpretentious and easy to drink wines. But Villota Blanco Selección is the exception that confirms the rule with its 6 month aging in French oak barrels. The cold maceration, the must fermenting on the lees and the periodic battonage until it reaches optimum quality, also contribute to making it what it is.

Tim Atkins will have tasted countless wines throughout his career. Some will be good, some less so. But very few have managed to make him fall in love like the Villota Blanco Selección did. With over 30 years of experience behind him, Atkins sure knows what he's talking about. So surely that means we should listen to him and try Villota blanco Selección?

Rioja is one of the most important areas of wine production in the world. It has a long history, and exceptional soils and climates. From the Tempranillo and Grenache varieties they make great red wines that are masterfully aged which demonstrates the experience passed from generation to generation.
