Scala Dei Negre 2018 is a young red wine made with the Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Tinta and Syrah red varieties by the Scala Dei winery in the D.O.Q. Priorat.

Dating right back to the Carthusian monks and their winemaking tradition, Cellers Scala Dei was the first winery to sell bottled Priorat wine, long before this area started to become fashionable in the eighties. Now part of the Codorniu Group, the winery is one of the best in the denomination and is directed by winemaker Rofes.

Scala Dei Negre is made from vines aged between 15 and 25 years old planted in the typical slate soils that characterise the Priorat region. These strains are planted on steep slopes where work has to be carried out manually. They use conventional agriculture and the harvest is carried out manually at the optimum point of ripeness.

In the winery, Scala Dei Negre is made in small open 7,000 kg tanks, with evenly ripened grapes. Alcoholic fermentation takes place with native yeasts at a controlled temperature followed by maceration with the skins for 12 to 16 days. Finally, the wine ages for 6-8 months in stainless steel tanks until being bottled.

Scala Dei Negre is a young, tasty example of wine from a denomination that stands out for the qualities the licorella soil gives it. An explosion of fruit in every way.

Scala Dei is the oldest winery of Priorat. It was established by the Carthusian monks in 1163, and until this day it still preserves the same spirit for handcrafted work. The wines of Scala Dei capture the essence of the rough landscape, the intense climate and the old vines. The result is wines with an authentic expression of the “terroir”. The entrance of the group Codorníu Raventós in the company in the middle of 2000, has allowed them to expand and modernize the facilities, and turn the business objective towards the consolidation of red wines. This has led specialized press and competitions to praise them and acknowledge them in recent years.
Pictures and situation Scala Dei
Priorat is craftsmanship and tradition, old and robust vines that are grown and born deep inside the province of Tarragona. They are grown on slopes that are sleety with low fertility and difficult to grow in. In Priorat they produce great red wines of an excellent quality, a maroon colour, robust, dense and rich flavour, intense aromas and sometimes there are reflections present of minerals from the soils.
