Raúl Pérez & Niepoort Calderera Tinto is made in the D.O. Bierzo, specifically in the town of Valtuille de Abajo, León. 

Raúl Pérez, from Bierzo, and Dirk Niepoort, from Douro, have collaborated to make wines in different regions. This time Dirk has travelled to Bierzo to make the Calderera wine. 

Raúl Pérez & Niepoort Calderera Tinto is made with the Mencía grape from areas mainly made up of slate, but also from vineyards on sandy soils. Production is carried out in a way that preserves the fruit, without an excessive contribution of the method.

This winery has belonged to the Van der Niepoort since 1848, when it was ceded by Eduard Krebe, who founded it six years earlier. Currently, the company is directed by Rolf van der Niepoort and his son, Dirk, the fifth generation. It is one of the most renowned Portuguese wine companies in the world, both for its quality —only 16 vintages classified as Vintage in 60 years— and for the great personality and inimitable style of its wines.

Bierzo wine is on the rise. It is a region defined by its small scale work, with plots scattered around, very old vines, artisan work of the small scale wineries, and the character of their principal variety, the Mencía grape, which produces fresh, fruity and delicious wines. Although the region is well known mostly for its red wines, it also produces white and rosé wines. If the red wines here are defined by the Mencía variety, then the white wines here are defined by the Godello. Godello grape has great aromatic potential, as well as an excellent balance between alcohol and acidity.  Despite the great potential of El Bierzo, its rise in the wine world would not have been possible without two people: Raúl Pérez and Ricardo Pérez. Two great winemakers who in little time have been able to produce critically acclaimed wines from the Bierzo region.
