Protos Crianza is a red wine from Ribera del Duero produced by Bodegas Protos. This winery, founded in 1927, is proud to be the first winery in Ribera del Duero, hence its name Protos which in Greek means "first".

In terms of location, the winery is located in the town of Peñafiel (Valladolid), on the same mountain where the Peñafiel Castle is located.

Protos Crianza wine is made from 100% Tinta del País (Tempranillo). The grapes come from vineyards planted in poor soils, low in organic matter and with a sandy texture.

The climate is continental Mediterranean with dry, hot summers and long, cold winters, with night frosts that can reach -18 ° C.

In addition, large temperature fluctuations between day and night favour the slow ripening of the grapes, which contributes to increased accumulation of sugars in the grapes and a higher concentration of tannins and polyphenols.

To prepare Protos Crianza, a first aging is carried out in French and American oak for 14 months and another aging in the bottle for 12 months from the end of the first aging.

La Ribera del Duero tells us a story about an ancestral tradition that goes back to the 9th century, and which was already used my the monks of the Order of the Cistercians. A story about farms and terroirs, a large winemaking kingdom that has its roots back in the Middle Age, and whose imprint it hidden in the essence of its villages, its villas and its castle, Castillo de Peñafiel, on the of the most important fortresses of the region. Still preserved in the inside of the castle is the ageing winery of Protos, the first winery in the area, alongside Vega Sicilia, that sold bottled Ribera del Duero wines.
Pictures and situation Protos
Ribera del Duero wine is one of the most prestigious wines in Spain. Red wines made with Tinto Fino variety grapes, with highly complex aromas, fine on the palate and with a great storage capacity. The wines of Ribera del Duero present a perfect balance between the vividness of the fruit and the refinement of the wood, which has led to them obtaining a well-deserved international acclaim.
