Marañones Tapafugas rosado is a barrel-aged rosé wine made with the Garnacha Tinta and Albillo varieties in the D.O. Vinos de Madrid by the Marañones winery.

Marañones is the name of the project set up by agronomist and winemaker Fernando García Alonso and owner of the J. Fernando Cornejo winery and vineyards. Located in the town of Sant Martín de Valdeiglesias, one of the three Vinos de Madrid sub-regions, they know how to make the most of the innate characteristics of the acclaimed Sierra de Gredos and shape them in the most honest way.

The Marañones Tapafugas rosé wine starts life at the foot of the meeting point between the Sierra de Guadarrama and the Sierra de Gredos, where the vines are influenced by the Alberche river. This is an experimental wine that uses different varieties year to year, depending on the vintage, but that is always made with a focus on quality. The vines are cultivated using environmentally friendly agriculture and the harvest is carried out manually in 12 kg boxes.

In the winery, the Marañones Tapafugas rosado grapes ferment with native yeasts in a used French oak wood foudre. The wine stays there to age for 10 months.

Marañones Tapafugas rosé is an experimental wine whose name “Tapafugas” is a tribute to one of the most endearing characters in Fernardo Cornejo’s town. An authentic Sierra de Gredos claret.

For the Marañones Winery, “landscape wines” is not just an advertising mantra. They handcraft the flavors and nuances presented by the unusual environment of the Sierra de Gredos, where they have a mosaic of vineyards which work under biodynamic principles in the DO Vinos de Madrid. They’re committed to the varieties of the area: Garnacha, Morenillo and Albillo, which come from old vines which grow in impressive high-altitude vineyards. In short, wines made with honesty and dedication.

Although Madrid wines (Vinos de Madrid) are still relatively unknown among consumers, the region has enjoyed a prestige and historical past that dates back to the twelfth century. Current wines in the region however are far from the old wines of San Martín de Valdeiglesias, who in their golden years were perceived as some of the most prestigious wines in Spain. Today, the Vinos of Madrid face a highly competitive wine scene, but the effort local wineries regain this old prestige is evident in the quality of the wines being produced.
