Characteristics Luna Beberide Mencía

Real reviews from customers who have purchased this product

Luna Beberide is a red wine from the D.O Bierzo produced by the Luna Beberide winery. Like many of the wines from this region, this is a single variety wine made with the Mencía grape.

The climate in El Bierzo is ideal for the cultivation of vines, with mild temperatures, temperate and with a constant humidity that is ideal for a good maturation of the grape. The climate is not too dissimilar to that of Galicia, with with prominent rainfall, but also rather dry, more similar to that the Castilian regions.

The grapes for Luna Beberide grow on calcareous-clay soils on slopes situated at altitudes between 600 and 750 metres, with a south facing orientation. They are located close to the towns of Villafrance del Bierzo and Cacabelos. The harvest of the fruit is usually carried out later, allowing the fruit to achieve their optimum point of maturation towards the end of September. After the harvest has been carried out, the bunches for Luna Beberide ferment in stainless steel tanks. This wine is then bottled without being aged.

Luna Beberide produced their first wine back in 1996. Since then, their products have been characterized for their simplicity and quality. Regarding the environment, on the other hand presents spectacular landscapes, it is another of the elements that characterize the winery.

Bodegas y Viñedos Luna Beberide are the surnames of Alejandro and Merche, the results of the initiative that their parents had more than thirty years ago in El Bierzo. The choose to use the local varieties Godello and Mencía from vineyards facing south, on the hillsides of the valley of El Bierzo. They are located at a moderate altitude, on clayey soils that mark the fruitiness of the Mencía, while the clayey-calcareous soils provide complexity. At 800 metres, the slate gives heterogeneity and minerality to these wines that are fresh and elegant. But it is also an experimental winery, where they work will all kinds of white and red foreign varieties to study their behaviour in the climate and on the different soils of El Bierzo.
Bierzo wine is on the rise. It is a region defined by its small scale work, with plots scattered around, very old vines, artisan work of the small scale wineries, and the character of their principal variety, the Mencía grape, which produces fresh, fruity and delicious wines. Although the region is well known mostly for its red wines, it also produces white and rosé wines. If the red wines here are defined by the Mencía variety, then the white wines here are defined by the Godello. Godello grape has great aromatic potential, as well as an excellent balance between alcohol and acidity.  Despite the great potential of El Bierzo, its rise in the wine world would not have been possible without two people: Raúl Pérez and Ricardo Pérez. Two great winemakers who in little time have been able to produce critically acclaimed wines from the Bierzo region.
