Les Tallades de Cal Nicolau is a red wine from the D.O Montsant produced by the Orto Vins winery. This is a single variety wine made using only the Picapoll grape variety.

The grapes used for Les Tallades de Cal Nicolau come from an estate that was planted back in 1880 by the great-grandfather of its current owner Joan Asens, one of the four founders of the winery. The estate grows exclusively the Picapoll grape variety, a variety that managed to survive the epidemic of phylloxera and grown on rootstock. The floors are mainly calcareous and farm occupies just over 0.17 hectares. This is situated at an altitude of 70 meters and has a south orientation.

Fermentation takes place in 500litre capacity barrels, while the harvested grapes undergo maceration for 28 days. Before being bottled and placed onto the market, Les Tallades de Cal Nicolau is aged for 12 months. Production of this wine is limited, with only 600 bottles made per vintage.

Although Orto Vins is a relatively young winery, officially founded back in 2008, yet it is home to a large heritage in the world of wine. Its four founders, who between them share decades of experience, look to express the great characteristics of the grape varieties native to the D.O Monstant.

Orto Vins is a relatively young viticultural project in the lands of Montsant. They make unique wines following biodynamic agriculture, with utmost respect for the vineyard and the land. Under quite a personal philosophy of the understanding of wine and viticulture, their wines offer the seal of identity of the area where they come from. The combination of the climate, the land and small plots with local varieties, are the identity traits of Orto Vins, which shape the particular personality of all its wines.

Montsant is situated in the province of Tarragona, surrounding the DOQ Priorat. Although a young Denominación de Origen, Monstant is located in a land with a large history in winemaking. The wines, mostly reds, are typically made with Grenache and Carignan grapes and are authentic, wild and artisanal. Wines produced in this region are usually extremely good value given the high quality.
