Itsasmendi Eklipse is a barrel-aged red wine made by the Itsasmendi winery with the Pinot Noir and Hondarribi Zuri varieties in the D.O. Bizkaiko Txakolina (Basque Country).

Located in Gernika (Biscay) Bodegas Itsasmendi was founded in 1994 by a group of winegrowers with the aim of producing quality wines. Today it is one of Bizkaiko Txakolina’s leading producers that is working hard to revive red wines in an area that is know for Txakolí.

Itsasmendi Eklipse is an example of this hard work. This red wine comes from vines located in an area known as the Cantabrian oak forest. The strains are over 20 years old and planted in loamy clay soils of limestone origin. They use traditional agriculture and the harvest is carried out manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness.

In the winery, the Itsasmendi Eklipse grapes are carefully selected and gently crushed. They then ferment in stainless steel tapered tanks. Finally, the wine ages for 10 months in 2000-litre French oak vats and barrels before being bottled.

Itsasmendi Eklipse is an original red Txakolí with wonderful acidity and aromatic complexity. An authentic Atlantic red full of nuances.

The truth is that for many centuries, nobody gave txakolí wine serious consideration, and very few mourned its disappearance. Compared to powerful wines with a higher alcohol content, txakolí was considered a ‘little’ local wine (‘vinillo’) of little interest. For a long time, a wine’s alcohol content was its only introduction. There were periods where still very poor production methods had not allowed the varieties to speak for themselves, and what’s more, txakolí forms part of a family economy at the same home-grown level as meat, milk and fish. In addition, the txacolí industry has not been advanced or prepared enough to rigorously produce this small oenological joy until the last few decades.
