Fèlsina is an Italian winery in Castelnuovo Berardenga, in southeast Siena, in Tuscany. This estate, run by brothers Domenico, Giuseppe and Giovanni Poggiali, lies right on the border that separates the DOCG Chianti Classico from the DOCG Chianti Colli Senesi. This border region, as the owners call it, has the potential to produce excellent wines in both denominations. They use the same grapes (the Sangiovese variety) but on the two difference sides of the line.

They produce various wines, but their Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Colli Senesi made in the DOCG Chianti Colli Senesi stands out. This wine is made with great dedication and care: manual harvesting, destemming, pressing and fermentation.

After this, the wine begins to acquire its true character with a 15-day maceration (between 28 ºC and 30 ºC), followed by two types of aging: most of the wine ages in new foudres, with a small amount aging in used oak barrels. After a year, the two wines are mixed and spend a final 3 months aging in the bottle.

Italy, with France’s permission, is also known as the wine country. The winemaking possibilities on this peninsula are endless. Learning about them all and knowing how to distinguish their nuances is a real challenge. Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Colli Senesi is a good place to start.
