Daterra Portela do Vento Xisto is a red wine made with the Mencía, Garnacha Tintorera and Palomino varieties by Daterra Viticultores in the D.O. Ribeira Sacra, in Galicia.

Daterra Viticultores is run by Laura Lorenzo, a young winegrower who set up her project in the Manzaneda area in the south-eastern corner of the Ribeira Sacra to recover the ancient local winemaking methods. Local varieties and ancient methods are the focus of her work and the resulting wines have an Atlantic profile and plenty of personality.

Daterra Portela do Vento Xisto comes from 100 year old vineyards. These are old vines planted on steep slopes at an altitude of 350-450 metres on schist soils rich in mica and feldspar. They are cultivated using traditional agriculture with no machinery and using biodynamic and environmentally friendly treatments.

In the winery, the Daterra Portela do Vento Xisto grape bunches are trodden by foot and macerated with skins for 11 days. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts in used 500-litre French oak vats. The wine is then aged for 11 months in four-use foudres. The wine is not clarified or filtered and no additives are used, except for a minimal amount of sulphite.

Daterra Portela do Vento Xisto is made through passion and dedication to the land and is a tribute to the ancient practices of our ancestors. A fresh and smooth wine with a truly Atlantic profile.
