Clos Baltasar is a red wine produced by Bodegas San Alejandro in Miedes de Aragón (Zaragoza), D.O. Calatayud.

Bodegas San Alejandro was founded in 1962 in Miedes de Aragón (Zaragoza). It was named after St Alejandro, whose remains are in the 17th-century Mudejar style Franciscan Convent in Miedes.

This project, which began with the enthusiasm and effort of a group of winegrowers, is now a benchmark in the region for the production and marketing of wines of the highest quality. It is distinguished by its good work both in the vineyards and in the production of its wines, with the aim of maintaining and improving the standard of living of its members and workers to promote the rural environment and enable employment for future generations.

Thanks to its partners, Bodegas San Alejandro has a great diversity of vineyards, most of them with a considerable age, at altitudes ranging from 700 to 1100 metres, with soils of black and red slate, rocks and clays. A wide range of terroirs that allow them to obtain the best grapes for each type of wine.

Clos Baltasar is a red wine made with Red Grenache from old vineyards and a small percentage of other varieties, such as Miguel de Arco, Bobal and Moristel. The plots have been chosen after a careful selection of mountain vineyards that lasted 15 years.

Once the grapes have been harvested and selected in the vineyard itself, they are transported to the winery for maceration with the skins in cement deposits, where they will also go through the fermentation. This wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels.

Clos Baltasar is an intense, deep and balanced wine. On the nose, aromas of ripe red fruit, typical of the Grenache, with slightly toasted notes stand out. In the mouth, it is ample, silky and full-bodied, with a long fresh finish.

The history and legendary Camino de Santiago to Navarra, with the resulting French and Central European cultural influence in the area, influenced in the Middle Ages the tradition of unique wines, centred on the use of the Garnacha Tinta grape variety. The modernisation of wineries, the careful choice of the vineyards, the incorporation of noble varieties, and the commitment of winemakers seeking more flavour instead of alcohol, has led to a new generation of Calatayud wines, which are fine, elegant and very personal.
