Renowned worldwide for their Port and Douro wines, Burmester is a Portuguese winery with British roots and more than 250 years of history that has been passing down its winemaking tradition from generation to generation. Although it seemed like this legacy might have been disrupted with the tragic passing of J.W. Burmester who was hit by a wave on the Cadouços beach in Foz do Douro in 1885, his descendants have carried the company after all. Their wines are now available in more than 30 countries around the world and are a clear leader among the best known Portuguese wines.
Their Burmester Colheita, a fortified wine made from the native Tinta Cao, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca varieties, honours their terroir in Quinta do Arnozelo, in the heart of the Douro Superior region. These vines are cultivated in a traditional way and enjoy a very special microclimate, acquiring the unique character of the D.O. Porto. The grapes are harvested by hand and then selected, destemmed and crushed in the winery with a careful maceration. Fermentation takes place in vats at a controlled temperature and once it reaches the right level of sweetness, the process is stopped by adding wine alcohol. Finally, it ages for 84 months in oak barrels before being bottled.
With the name Colheita (‘vintage’ in Portuguese), Burmester Colheita is a single year premium Port wine that ages in wooden barrels for a minimum of 7 years. A fortified wine that is harmonious, smooth and structured.
