D.O.Ca. Rioja (La Rioja)
Barón de Ley Varietales Garnacha is a red wine from the D.O.C Rioja produced by the Barón de Ley winery (situated in Mendavia, Navarra). The winery was founded back in the 1980’s with the aim of producing classic style wines.
The winery is currently home to 400 hectares of vineyards situated across different zones of the D.O.C Rioja, with the different grape varieties adapting to the different microclimates of the DO, from the Alavesa to the Rioja Baja.
Barón de Ley Varietales Garnacha is made exclusively with the Garnacha grape variety, taken from vineyards in Ausejo in the Rioja Baja. The vineyards are situated at around 450 metres above sea level where the Garnacha grapes has perfectly adapted to the Mediterranean climate.
The winemaking process begins with fermentation in stainless steel tanks for 7 days at a controlled temperature of 25ºC, followed by post fermentiv maceration for 3 days. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in the same tanks for 15 days at a controlled temperature of 20º. The wine is then aged for 5 months in american oak, followed by another 6 months in (10,000litre) French oak fudres.
Barón de Ley Varietales Garnacha is a good example that Garnacha is perhaps one of the most representative varieties and how it is able to adapt to the mediterranean climate of the Rioja Baja.
