About Josep Grau Viticultor Vespres Tinto

Every day, at 18:45, the Carthusian monks would pause their routine to pray vespers, the final prayer before retiring for the night. It was also the moment they savoured a glass of red wine, crafted from the grapes they themselves cultivated on these lands. Centuries later, their legacy remains alive in Montsant, a region steeped in history and winemaking tradition.

In homage to those monks and their influence on wine culture, Josep Grau Viticultors produces Vespres (vespers in Catalan), a red that captures the essence of this land. Behind this endeavour is Josep Grau, who decided to return to his roots and reconnect with the vineyard that witnessed his upbringing. His philosophy is clear: to craft wines with authenticity, eschewing fads and trends, respecting nature and allowing the vineyard to speak for itself.

Vespres originates from vineyards aged between 35 and 50 years, meticulously cultivated under a respectful viticulture. The harvest is conducted manually and the winemaking process follows a minimalist approach, avoiding unnecessary interventions. After an ageing period of 8 months in French oak barrels, the wine, bottled unfiltered, expresses the full depth, freshness, and character of Montsant.

Josep Grau Viticultor Vespres Tinto is a tribute to those who, between prayers, sowed the roots of a tradition that continues to inspire every glass. A reminder that true excellence is born from patience, respect, and dedication.

2022

Josep Grau Viticultor Vespres Tinto 2022 is a red wine with a Mediterranean character that stands out for its intensity and freshness. On the nose, it offers aromas of red fruits such as cherries and raspberries, accompanied by subtle balsamic notes. Its texture is silky, with a refreshing acidity that adds liveliness. On the palate, it feels elegant and fluid, with a prolonged finish that invites one to savour it. It is a perfect choice for those seeking a fruity and light wine.                      
 
2017

Vespres 2017 is an eloquent red wine exuding aromatic layers of ripe black fruit, toasted undertones, and balsamic nuances. On the palate, it reveals a succulent, opulent texture, with a medium-bodied structure, invigorating acidity, velvety tannins, and a distinctly pronounced mineral finish.
2014 Potent and fleshy. Passing is unctuous, embracing and flavoursome with smoked memories and spicy notes. Persistent finish and lightly balsamic.

Cherry red with a purple sparkle.

Good intensity, red fruit aromas with sweet and toasted notes. Balsamic base and somewhat herbal.
2013 Powerful on the palate with a fleshy, long and flavourful mid palate. Very elegant. A liquorice hint. Smoked, creamy and spiced notes are detected as well as a fresh balsamic sensation. A persistent finish.

Cherry red with a violet rib.

Clean and intense on the nose. Ripe red fruit together with creamy and toasted notes. Sweet, spicy and balsamic hints. A humid Mediterranean forest undergrowth hint is detected.
2011 In the mouth it is powerful with a mid-palate marked by a high acidity and very present tannins. Long and persistent finish. Aftertaste with plenty of fruit. Spiced and toasted hints at retro-olfaction. It is a consistent and robust red wine, whose rest in the bottle will be good.

Intense cherry red colour with purple reflections. Bright. Abundant tear which colours the glass.

High aromatic intensity, expressive. Very ripe red fruit, stewed, strong, well-combined with toasted, intense spiced aromas and pleasant balsamic touches.
2010 A very nice, intense, fruity and balanced wine, with a long mid palate marked by the notes of fruit, the creaminess and the nice toasted aromas. It provides soft, silky and fresh sensations. Bulky. It shows a good acidity and well integrated tannins. Its good finish has a pleasant persistence with hints of fruit.  Elegant, tasty and fresh wine with character. A round wine that seduces us from the outset.

Beautiful ruby red colour with purple reflections. Clean and bright wine with a medium-high robe and elegant tears.

Intense and complex, but at the same time clean aromas. Some gentle but marked toasted aromas are released along some subtle flowers notes and some hints of liquorice and coffee on a background of very expressive and intense red and black fruit. The whole set is wrapped in an extraordinary creaminess. Once it opens out, some very fresh balsamic notes are noticed.
2009 Montsant wine with a strong character, powerful but fresh and suggestive, and with a wide structure. Silky and sensual mid palate with a touch of sweet. The acidity is just enough to bring freshness to the wine. Long and pleasant aftertaste.

Deep red, very dense.

Red wine of aromatic complexity. After the nuances of red and black fruits, floral notes provided by the variety Grenache appear (violets and rose petals) together with toffee notes, typical of the variety Samsó. There is a presence of minerality with well integrated discreet notes of smoky and spicy.
2008 The palate is sensual, silky, but with lots of volume and character. Muscular and, at the same time, aristocratic Montsant wine. The aftertaste is long and reminiscent of the species and the unique character of the soil.

Deep red, very dense.

The nose is complex, with notes of minerality, red and black fruit and toffees. Eucalyptus and forest notes add yet another record. 
2007 Elegant and flavoursome, with long aftertaste and extraordinary finesse. With a spectacular step in the mouth, pleasant, harmonious and comprehensive. Full of smoothness and structure.

Deep red, very cloudy.

Volume fruit very covered with red and black berries. The notes of spice and cocoa aroma gives it a very wide scale. The Toffees appear over time.
