About Domaine de Chevalier

Some people have an intense passion for their work and see it as an integral part of their personal identity. In the case of Olivier Bernard – president of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux, vice-president of the Bordeaux Wine Academy, co-owner of Château Guiraud and CEO of the Financière Bernard family group – a true distinction between professional and private life does not exist. The truth is that wine is his life. Owner of Domaine de Chevalier (‘knight’ in Gascon), an ancient estate dating back to the 15th century and owned by his family since 1983, he has the pleasure of working and living with his family in an ideal manner. It all started when his father, who trained him in management and the business world, acquired the winery and offered him the position of manager. It is then that he had the opportunity to learn over 5 years from Claude Ricard, an encyclopaedic winemaker and former owner of Chevalier, who taught him better than anyone to love and respect the art of wine.

And so it is demonstrated in the eponymous wine Domaine de Chevalier. A coupage of the international varieties cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot and cabernet franc from 50 hectares of gravelly and stony-clay soils. Vines with an average age of 30 years that are cultivated in a environmentally-friendly way with organic and biodynamic treatments. When the grapes reach optimum ripeness, they are harvested manually in small boxes and taken straight to the winery. There, a second selection is made, destemmed and carefully crushed to initiate alcoholic fermentation in thermoregulated tanks for 3 weeks with manual treading. The wine is then aged for 18 months in oak barrels.

With a very limited production and exceptional quality, Domaine de Chevalier is the knight in shining armour of Pessac-Léognan. A Grand Cru Classé de Graves where good work becomes pure passion.
