About Château Cambon Brouilly

Jules Chauvet is, without doubt, the father of the French natural wine movement. A Beaujolais merchant who championed naturalness in wine through his great scientific knowledge as a chemist and oenologist. Since then, many winegrowers have followed in his footsteps. In his homeland, Beaujolais, we find the so-called “gang of five”. Rebel vignerons who, following the master’s principles, decided to return to the origins of viticulture and winemaking. Of the five members: Guy Breton, Jean-Paul Thévenet, Jean Foillard, Joseph Chamonard and Marcel Lapierre, the latter two were responsible for implementing all the minimal intervention methods in Château Cambon, a winery that Jean-Claude Chanudet also worked at. During his time there, he strongly defended the traditional practices of the area and showed the whole world that Beaujolais was about much more than Nouveau. After Lapierre’s untimely death, his daughter Marie joined Jean-Claude Chanudet at the project.

Among their great productions is Château Cambon Brouilly. A red wine made with the Gamay variety from vineyards located between Morgon and Fleurie, in the AOC Beaujolais. This is an amazing 2-hectare terroir with granitic and clayey soils. The whole estate is cultivated using organic and biodynamic practices. In the winery the grapes undergo a minimal intervention vinification with a carbonic maceration of 10-15 days without any oenological additives. The wine is then aged in oak barrels for 6-9 months. Finally, the wine is bottled without filtering, clarifying or adding sulphites.

The result is a brilliant Beaujolais, a pure expression of the Gamay grape. As NYT wine critic Eric Asimov puts it “Château Cambon Brouilly is the kind of wine you just don't want to stop drinking.”

 

2019

Château Cambon Brouilly 2019 is a smooth red wine with attractive, complex aromas of small black fruit, with earthy notes and hints of freshly cut flowers. On the palate it is fresh, juicy and bright. A wine where the fruit is enhanced by great acidity and with silky tannins that make it very pleasant.
