About Niepoort Vertente

Niepoort Vertente is a red wine made with Tinta Amarela, Touriga Franca, Rufete and other varieties. It is classified as a DOC Douro wine produced by Niepoort.

Niepoort was founded in 1842 and is currently run by Dirk Niepoort, fifth generation of the family who give the winery its name. They use traditional Portuguese techniques such as grape treading, fermentation in cement tanks or aging in pipes, 550-litre port-aging barrels, whilst also using new technologies that ensure the grapes are handled with care. The winery also has vines in different locations, some of which are over 100 years old, and an aging cellar in the town of Vila Nova de Gaia.

The Niepoort Vertente vines are 35 to 80 years old and located in Quinta de Nápoles. The other vines can be found on the hillside by the Pinhao River. The soils are mainly composed of shale. Planting density is between 4,000 to 6,500 plants per hectare and vines are trained using the Guyot and Cordon de Royat methods. The plots are located at an altitude of 150 to 500 meters above sea level. They are harvested manually so that the grapes reach the winery as in tact as possible.

The Niepoort Vertente vintage is selected in the field and then selected a second time in the winery. It ferments in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature and malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels. It is then aged in the same place for 22 months.

Niepoort Vertente is an elegant, powerful wine with intense red fruit and a good aging potential.
2015 Niepoort Vertente 2015 is a red wine characterised by minerality, touches of dark chocolate and berries. The wood is well integrated, giving it smoky and spicy touches. On the palate it is structured, elegant, deep and with a good column of polished tannins. The acidity is also balanced with fruity aromas, body and soft tannins and its finish is lingering and pleasant.
