L'Avi Arrufi Blanco is a white wine produced in D.O. Terra Alta by Celler Piñol, in Batea, west of Tarragona.
Celler Piñol is a family-run winery founded in 1947, producing mainly handcrafted wine. It was not until 1995 that they bottled their first wine. They manage 17 hectares, making wines with high expression and complexity, with local and foreign varieties. They advocate for local varieties, such as the White Grenache, the Carignan and the Morenillo. With other producers of the area, they are making a great effort to bring back the Morenillo variety, which is almost abandoned and is only used to complete coupages with other grapes.
The vineyard of Celler Piñol is located in Batea, between 400 and 500 metres of altitude, planted mainly on clayey-calcareous soils. The climate is Mediterranean. They carry out organic cultivation in the entire vineyard.
L'Avi Arrufi Blanc is a wine made from White Grenache, from vineyards that are located at 450 meters above sea level, planted on clayey-calcareous soils that are poor in organic matter, and which are over 55 years old.
They are manually harvested and placed in 15-kg boxes. Once they arrive at the winery, they go through skin-contact maceration for 6 hours. Once the flor must is separated, the alcoholic fermentation begins at a controlled temperature, 20ºC, in French oak barrels, 50% of them new and 50% of them one-year-old. Once it has finished, it is left to stand for 7 months in these barrels, with a batonnage every 15 days. Before it is launched on the market, it is left in the bottle for a year.
