Albert de Vilarnau Xarel·lo Fermentado en Castaño Gran Reserva 2016 is a cava distinguished by its sophistication and elegance. It presents a bright yellow hue with golden glints, accompanied by fine and persistent bubbles that envelop you in their delicacy. On the nose, it unfolds a symphony of tropical aromas with nuances that evoke the freshness of chamomile. About Albert de Vilarnau Xarel·lo Fermentado en Castaño Gran Rerserva

In Montseny, chestnut trees have been observing the passage of time for centuries. The Romans brought them — for they already knew what was good — and since then, they have provided wood, shade, and picturesque landscapes. These trees have played a significant role over the years in furniture making, roasted chestnuts, and even wine production.

For generations, Catalan farmhouses used chestnut barrels to ferment their white wines. It was what they had, and it worked. Then came modernity, French oak, international trends… and chestnut was forgotten. Fortunately, there are wineries like Vilarnau that have chosen to give it a second life.

With the assistance of a cooper from Montseny who crafts the barrels by hand, the winery has revived this local tradition in its Albert de Vilarnau Xarel·lo Fermentado en Castaño Gran Reserva. A sparkling wine with Denominación de Origen Cava and a forest soul. The grapes of the xarel·lo variety come from a vineyard planted in 1991 in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, 250 metres above sea level. The must ferments in those chestnut barrels and then rests for over 72 months in the bottle. Quite something. 

Albert de Vilarnau Fermentado en Castaño Gran Reserva is elegant, dry, and vibrant. A cava that proves that the old, when done well, can sound more contemporary than ever.
