Young wine
Designed for drinking relatively early
Young wine is a wine that has been bottled after fermentation and has not undergone any kind of aging process. Young wine is usually ready to drink a few months after harvest. Young wines tend to be pleasant, fresh and fruity. Their personality makes them perfect for enjoying with light dishes or for a few drinks outside.
The characteristics of young wines come from the way they are made. They are designed for drinking relatively early and to have a certain personality. This design process begins in the vineyard and ends in the winery.
In the vineyard, for example, young vines produce the ideal grapes for this type of wine. Older vines, on the other hand, tend to produce more structured grapes that are perfect for wines that are intended to be aged and longer-living. Then, in the winery, there are certain processes that will result in a good young wine. They are most commonly made with short macerations and controlled fermentations at low temperatures. The short maceration process produces a light and pleasant structure that will make them suitable for immediate consumption, and the low temperature fermentation will preserve and generate more fruity and floral aromas.
Young wine is a wine designed to be enjoyed soon after it has been produced, whilst it still has its fresh and fruity youthful characteristics. However, some young wines can develop well and still be in perfect condition a few years after bottling. Those that best withstand the test of time are made with more reductive grapes, grapes with less tendency to oxidise, and those made with more acidic grapes.
Some of the most common aromas in young wine are: red wines reveal aromas of strawberry, raspberry, cherry, plum and violet, and are rather fresh and sweet. The white wines usually have aromas of white fruits like green apples, pears, peaches and apricots as well as flowers like jasmine or roses. Finally, the rosé wines usually have predominant aromas of very sweet red fruits. So, we can see that young wine is a good display of what each grape variety has to offer, the place it comes from, and its soil and climate. It would be a fun exercise to taste various young wines made with different varieties in different places and try to identify their similarities and differences.
