About Virgen del Galir Regueirón

The viticulturist lives with an eye on the sky, acutely aware that the weather dictates the fate of the harvest. Thus, the tradition of invoking the protection of saints over the fields has long been widespread across the land, with countless local devotions deeply rooted in every corner. In the small village of Éntoma (Galicia), nestled in the heart of the Galir River valley, this spiritual refuge takes the form of a modest chapel. Its image is emblazoned in the very identity of the winery to remind us that, for centuries, the Virgen del Galir has watched over the steep slopes where the grapes peacefully ripen.

From the village of Éntoma, in the southern part of the Denominación de Origen Valdeorras, Bodegas Virgen del Galir crafts this single-parcel white wine as part of the project spearheaded by the Compañía de Vinos del Largo Olivar and the historic firm CVNE. The wine originates from a unique vineyard named Regueirón, a tiny plot of merely 0.42 hectares arranged in terraces, the stepped platforms that allow cultivation on the steep slopes characteristic of the area. The vines, nearly 30 years old, grow on a hillside with a 40% gradient and a south-southeast orientation that ensures excellent sun exposure and constant aeration. The soils, predominantly loamy-clay and slate, provide depth and a pronounced mineral expression, while the Atlantic character of the environment, despite being the southernmost part of Valdeorras, maintains excellent acidity and balanced ripening. All this is cultivated under a philosophy of sustainable viticulture and utmost respect for the environment.

The winemaking process in the winery follows a meticulous procedure designed to preserve the purity and personality of the vineyard. After the harvest, the grapes, a blend of godello, treixadura, and albariño, are kept for 24 hours in a cold chamber for a brief cold maceration to enhance aromatic extraction. Subsequently, a direct pressing is performed, and the must undergoes spontaneous fermentation thanks to native yeasts, distributed among three 500-litre oak barrels—one new and two previously used—and a 600-litre ceramic vat, a material that allows gentle micro-oxygenation without imparting wood aromas. Once fermentation is complete, Virgen del Galir Regueirón undergoes 11 months of ageing between barrels and the ceramic vat, followed by a further refinement with 3 months in a 2,000-litre foudre before bottling.

The result is a precise, fresh, and deeply expressive white wine, capable of faithfully reflecting the landscape of Éntoma and the Atlantic character of Valdeorras. In Virgen del Galir Regueirón, the viticultural tradition, the patient work of the viticulturist, and the symbolic protection of the Virgen del Galir converge in a wine that speaks honestly of its origin.
