About Viña Ardanza Reserva

In the very heart of Rioja Alta, the Barrio de la Estación de Haro is not only a picturesque area but also the soul of the region's winemaking tradition. Its name originates from a vital connection with the Haro train station, inaugurated in 1860, which was the driving force behind the growth of the area's wine trade. The arrival of the railway allowed wines from the Denominación de Origen Rioja to reach both national and international markets, spreading the region's fame to every corner of the globe.

However, it wasn't just transportation that transformed this district into a wine reference point. The easy access to the station attracted wineries that began to establish themselves in the area, building a unique winemaking identity that has endured over time. Thus, the Barrio de la Estación became the epicentre of Rioja viticulture, where the art of winemaking intertwines with the history and tradition of the region.

One of the most iconic wineries in this district is La Rioja Alta, a name synonymous with history and excellence. Founded in 1890 by five families from Rioja and the Basque Country, the project embarked on its journey with a firm purpose: to produce wines of the highest quality that represent the best of this land. Its winery, located just a few steps from the station, bears witness to how, from its inception, it has remained true to that mission, using traditional methods and a profound respect for the land.

One of its great classics is Viña Ardanza Reserva, a red wine that epitomises the best of Rioja's winemaking tradition. Made primarily from tempranillo and garnacha, it is a wine of great elegance and complexity. The tempranillo grapes, over 30 years old, come from the estates of La Cuesta and Montecillo, located in Fuenmayor and Cenicero. Meanwhile, the garnacha grapes grow in vineyards planted at an altitude of 600 metres, in the locality of Tudelilla (La Rioja Baja). The winemaking process is a true art. Harvesting is done manually, ensuring that only the finest grapes reach the winery, where they are fermented at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks for 15 days. Subsequently, the wine ages separately in American oak barrels: the tempranillo for 36 months, and the garnacha for 30 months. This ageing process results in a vegan wine with unique complexity, completed with up to six manual rackings before bottling.

Viña Ardanza Reserva is not just a wine; it is a true masterpiece that pays homage to the history and terroir of Rioja, a brilliant example of what it means to be a great classic, receiving accolades from specialised critics each vintage, with renowned media such as Robert Parker and Wine Spectator.
