About Humus Branco

Humus Branco is a natural, organic and vegan white wine made by Encosta da Quinta with the Arinto and Fernao Pires varieties in Lisbon, Portugal.
 
Encosta da Quinta is a family winery run by Rodrigo Felipe who, having worked as a civil engineer, left everything behind to dedicate his life to the estate that his grandfather acquired in 1960 in Caldas da Raina, a few kilometres from Lisbon. This self-taught winegrower started the Humus project to produce natural, organic wines using local native varieties, connecting with nature and the terroir in a way that allows him to bottle very complex aromas and flavours. 
 
Humus Branco comes from vineyards lying on steep slopes surrounded by a eucalyptus forest. Here lie 10 hectares of vines planted on clay and limestone soils and with a great Atlantic influence. They are cultivated using organic agriculture and no chemical products. The harvest is carried out manually in small boxes with a careful selection.
 
In the winery, the Humus Branco grapes are gently pressed and the resulting must is fermented with native yeasts and aged in old 225-litre oak barrels. Finally, the wine is bottled without clarifying or filtering.
 
The name Humus was suggested by Rodrigo Felipe's wife, and this project is a true journey back to origins. Humus Branco is proof of this. A white wine made with local varieties and terroirs and a great Atlantic influence.
 
2018 Humus Branco 2018 is a white wine with complex aromas of ripe white fruit and toasted notes. On the palate it is fresh, complex and balanced. A full-bodied wine with a very lively acidity and a pleasant minerality.
